भगवान शिव के विराट स्वरूप की महिमा बताते हुए शिव पञ्चाक्षरी स्तोत्र के प्रारंभ में शिव को ‘नागेन्द्रहाराय’कहकर स्तुति की गई है, अर्थात ऐसे देवता जिनके गले में सर्प का हार है।
धार्मिक मान्यताओं के अनुसार वासुकी नाम का नाग भगवान शिव का परम भक्त था। शिवपुराण के अनुसार नागों के राजा वासुकी के द्वारा ही समुद्र मंथन के दौरान रस्सी के रूप में मेरु पर्वत के चारों ओर लपेटकर मंथन किया गया था।
कहा यह भी जाता है कि जब भगवान श्रीकृष्ण को कंस की जेल से वासुदेव के द्वारा गोकुल ले जाया जा रहा था तब मार्ग में बारिश और यमुना नदी के उफान की कठिनाइयों से वासुकी नाग ने ही श्रीकृष्ण की रक्षा की थी। वासुकी ने ही कुंती पुत्र भीम को दस हजार हाथियों के बल प्राप्ति का वरदान दिया था।
धार्मिक मान्यताओं के अनुसार वासुकी ने भगवान शिव की सेवा में नियुक्त होना स्वीकार किया था। उनकी भक्ति से प्रसन्न होकर भगवान शिव ने उन्हें अपने गणों में शामिल किया था और वरदान स्वरूप अपने गले में आभूषण के रूप में स्थान दिया था.! ।। जय विराट स्वरूप भगवान महादेव ।।
