स्थान – वृंदावन में यमुना किनारे वंशीवट क्षेत्र में है गोपीश्वरमहादेव मंदिर,.यह मंदिर पांच हजार वर्ष पुराना है. यहां भगवान महादेव पार्वती, गणेश, नंदीश्वर के साथ विराजमान हैं।
स्थापना-श्रीकृष्ण के प्रपौत्र वज्रनाभ ने शांडिल्य ऋषि के सहयोग से वृंदावन में गोपीश्वर महादेव मंदिर की फिर से प्राण प्रतिष्ठा कराई.। समूचे विश्व में यही एकमात्र मंदिर है, जहां विराजे शिवलिंग का श्रृंगार एक नारी की तरह होता है।
भगवान शिव का गोपी रूप धारण करना
शरद पूर्णिमा की शरत-उज्ज्वल चाँदनी में वंशीवट यमुना के किनारे श्याम सुंदर साक्षात की वंशी जब बज उठी.। तब कृष्ण-राधा और अन्य गोपिकाओं की रासलीला देखने के लिए भगवान महादेव अपनी समाधि भंग कर कैलाश से सीधे वृंदावन चले आए.। वहां रास लीला के प्रवेश द्वार पर गोपियों ने भगवान शिव को रोक दिया और कहा कि यहां भगवान श्रीकृष्ण के अलावा किसी अन्य पुरुष का प्रवेश वर्जित है.। इस पर शंकर ने गोपियों को ही कुछ उपाय बताने के लिए कहा.।
ललिता सखी ने कहा – हे भोले बाबा ! आप मानसरोवर में स्नान कर गोपी का रूप धारण कर के महारास में प्रवेश हुआ जा सकता है.। फिर क्या था, भगवान शिव अर्धनारीश्वर से पूरे नारी-रूप बन गये.। श्री यमुना जी ने षोडश श्रृंगार कर दिया, तो बाबा भोलेनाथ गोपी रूप हो गये. प्रसन्न मन से वे गोपी-वेष में महारास में प्रवेश करने चले प्रवेश द्वार पर ललिता जी खड़ी थी गोपी रूप धारी शिव के कानो में युगल मंत्र का उपदेश किया है,। क्योकि ललिता सखी के आदेश के बिना कोई रास में प्रवेश नहीं कर सकता था। महादेव गोपी रूप धारण कर लीला में प्रवेश कर गए.।
श्री शिवजी मोहिनी-वेष में मोहन की रासस्थली में गोपियों के मण्डल में मिलकर अतृप्त नेत्रों से विश्वमोहन की रूप-माधुरी का पान करने लगे। मोहन ने ऐसी मोहिनी वंशी बजायी कि सुधि-बुधि भूल गये भोलेनाथ, नटवर-वेषधारी, श्रीरासविहारी, रासेश्वरी, रसमयी श्रीराधाजी एवं गोपियों को नृत्य एवं रास करते हुए देख नटराज भोलेनाथ भी स्वयं ता-ता थैया कर नाच उठे.और उनकी सिर से साड़ी सरक गई.।
भगवान कृष्ण पहचान गए भोलेनाथ को. उन्होंने रासेश्वरी श्रीराधा व गोपियों को छोड़कर ब्रज-वनिताओं और लताओं के बीच में गोपी रूप धारी गौरीनाथ का हाथ पकड़ लिया और मन्द-मन्द मुस्कुराते हुए बड़े ही आदर-सत्कार से बोले, “आइये स्वागत है, महाराज गोपेश्वर.।
श्री राधा आदि श्रीगोपीश्वर महादेव के मोहिनी गोपी के रूप को देखकर आश्चर्य में पड़ गयीं। तब श्रीकृष्ण ने कहा, “राधे, यह कोई गोपी नहीं है, ये तो साक्षात् भगवान शंकर हैं.। हमारे महारास के दर्शन के लिए इन्होंने गोपी का रूप धारण किया है.।
तब श्रीराधा-कृष्ण ने हँसते हुए शिव जी से पूछा- “भगवन.! आपने यह गोपी वेष क्यों बनाया.?
भगवान शंकर बोले – “प्रभो.! आप की यह दिव्य रसमयी प्रेमलीला-महारास देखने के लिए गोपी-रूप धारण किया है.।
इस पर प्रसन्न हो कर श्रीराधाजी ने श्रीमहादेव जी से वर माँगने को कहा तो श्रीशिव जी ने यह वर माँगा “हम चाहते हैं कि यहाँ आप दोनों के चरण-कमलों में सदा ही हमारा वास हो. आप दोनों के चरण-कमलों के बिना हम कहीं अन्यत्र वास करना नहीं चाहते हैं.।
इस पर श्रीकृष्ण ने तथास्तु कह कर यमुना के निकट वंशीवट के सम्मुख भगवान शंकर को श्री गोपीश्वर महादेव के रूप में विराजित कर दिया.। साथ ही, उनसे यह कहा कि किसी भी व्यक्ति की व्रज-वृंदावन यात्रा तभी पूर्ण होगी, जब वह गोपीश्वर महादेव के दर्शन कर लेगा.।
यहां प्रतिदिन शिवलिंग की जल, दूध, दही, पंचामृत से रुद्राभिषेक और पूजा-अर्चना होती है.संध्याकाल में नित्य शिवलिंग का गोपी रूप में श्रृंगार होता है.इस मंदिर में पार्वती, गणेश और नंदी आदि गर्भ मंदिर के बाहर विराजमान हैं.। सामान्यतया भगवान शिव के दो रूपों का दर्शन होता है-दिगंबर और बाघंबर वेश में.यहां लहंगा, ओढनी, ब्लाउज, नथ, कर्णफूल, टीका आदि पहन कर और काजल, बिंदी, लाली आदि लगाए गोपीश्वरमहादेव के दर्शन होते हैं.इस वेश में भगवान शिव की छवि अत्यंत मनमोहक लगती है.।

Establishment-Vajranabha, the great grandson of Shri Krishna, with the help of sage Shandilya, re-consecrated the Gopishwar Mahadev temple in Vrindavan. This is the only temple in the entire world, where the Shivalinga is decorated like a woman.
Lord Shiva assuming the form of Gopi
When the Vanshi of Shyam Sundar Sakshat rang on the banks of river Yamuna in the autumn-bright moonlight of Sharad Purnima. Then Lord Mahadev broke his trance and came straight from Kailash to Vrindavan to see the Raslila of Krishna-Radha and other Gopikas. There, at the entrance of Raas Leela, the Gopis stopped Lord Shiva and said that the entry of any man other than Lord Shri Krishna is prohibited here. On this, Shankar asked the Gopis to tell him some solutions.
Lalita Sakhi said – O innocent Baba! You can enter Maharas by taking bath in Manasarovar and assuming the form of Gopi. Then what, Lord Shiva changed from Ardhanarishwar to full female form. When Shri Yamuna ji did Shodash adornment, Baba Bholenath became a Gopi. With a happy heart, he went to enter Maharas in the guise of Gopi. Lalita ji was standing at the entrance and preached the couplet mantra in the ears of Shiva in the form of Gopi. Because no one could enter the Raas without the orders of Lalita Sakhi. Mahadev took the form of Gopi and entered the leela.
Shri Shivji, in the guise of Mohini, joined the group of Gopis at Mohan’s Rassthali and started drinking the beauty of Vishwamohan’s beauty with unsatisfied eyes. Mohan played Mohini Vanshi in such a way that Bholenath forgot his senses. Seeing Natwar-Veshdhari, ShriRasvihari, Raaseshwari, Rasmayee ShriRadhaji and Gopis dancing and performing Raas, Nataraja Bholenath himself started dancing with ta-ta and took the saree from his head. It slipped away..
Lord Krishna recognized Bholenath. Leaving Raseshwari Shriradha and the Gopis, he held the hand of Gaurinath in the Gopi form amidst the Braj-Vanitas and creepers and smiling softly said with great respect, “Come welcome, Maharaj Gopeshwar.
Shri Radha and others were surprised to see the form of Mohini Gopi of Shri Gopishwar Mahadev. Then Shri Krishna said, “Radhe, this is not a Gopi, this is Lord Shankar in person. He has taken the form of a Gopi for the darshan of our Maharas.
Then Shri Radha-Krishna laughingly asked Lord Shiva – “Lord! Why did you disguise yourself as a Gopi?
Lord Shankar said – “Lord! I have taken the form of a Gopi to see this divine romantic love-festival of yours.
Pleased with this, Shri Radha ji asked Shri Mahadev ji to ask for a boon, then Shri Shiv ji asked for this boon, “We want that we should always reside here at the lotus feet of both of you. Without the lotus feet of both of you, we would be nowhere.” Don’t want to live anywhere else.
On this, Shri Krishna said Amen and enshrined Lord Shankar in the form of Shri Gopishwar Mahadev in front of Vanshivat near Yamuna. Also, it was told to him that the journey of any person to Vraj-Vrindavan will be complete only when he has darshan of Gopishwar Mahadev.
Here Rudrabhishek and worship of Shivalinga is done daily with water, milk, curd, Panchamrit. In the evening, Shivalinga is decorated in the form of Gopi. In this temple, the wombs of Parvati, Ganesh and Nandi etc. are seated outside the temple. Generally, Lord Shiva is seen in two forms – in Digambara and Baghambar guise. Here, Gopishwar Mahadev is seen wearing lehenga, odhni, blouse, nose ring, earring, tilak etc. and applying kajal, bindi, roli etc. Lord Shiva is seen in this guise. The image of Shiva looks very attractive.
