एक बार एक राजा ने अपने दरबारी मंत्रियों से पूछा, प्रजा के सारे काम मे करता हूँ, उनको अन्न में देता हूँ रोजगार में देता हूँ उनकी बेटियों के विवाह में कराता हूं सुरक्षा में देता हूँ हर काम मे करता हूं। फिर ये लोग आरती भगवान की क्यों करते है, मेरी पूजा मेरी आरती क्यों नही उतारते। फिर ऐसा और कोनसा काम है जो सिर्फ भगवान कर सकता है में नही कर सकता मुझे भगवान के काम बताओ।
मंत्रियों ने कहा महाराज इस प्रश्न का उत्तर तो कोई साधु महात्मा ही दे सकता है उन्ही का भगवान से परिचय रहता है। राजा ने कहा तो जाओ किसी महात्मा को यहाँ दरबार मे ले कर आओ जो मेरे इस प्रश्न का उत्तर दे सके।
पूरे राज्य में महात्माओ की खोज हुई राज्य की सीमा पर एक सिद्ध महात्मा की कुटिया थी। मंत्रियों ने जा कर महात्मा जी को राजा के प्रश्न का उत्तर पूछा। महात्मा जी ने कहा में कल स्वयं दरबार मे आकर राजा को उत्तर दूंगा, मंत्रियों ने वापिस आकर राजा को सूचना दी कल महात्मा जी स्वयं दरबार मे पधारेंगे और आपके प्रश्न का उत्तर देंगे।
अगले दिन महात्मा जी दरबार मे पहुँचे और राजा को देख कर 3 बार हाथ उठा कर (प्रणाम) किया जैसी की एक मर्यादा (नियम) होता है राजदरबार का ! राजा ने महात्मा जी से अपना प्रश्न पूछा. महात्मा जी ने कहा राजन आपके प्रश्न का उत्तर तो में दे दूं किंतु आपको पूछना तो आता नही, राजा ने कहा क्या मतलब. महात्मा जी बोले मतलब ये की जिससे ज्ञान लिया जाता है वो गुरु होता है, और गुरु को हमेशा उच्च आसन पर बैठाया जाता है l
पर यहाँ तो तू खुद ऊँचे आसान पर बैठा है। पहले मुझे अपना आसन दे, राजा तो सोच में पड़ गया बाद में महात्मा आसन से ना उतरा तो..लेकिन मंत्रियों के समझाने पर राजा ने महात्मा जी को अपना आसान दे दिया, राजा बोला अब बताइए गुरु जी, महात्मा बोले इस अहंकार रूपी मुकुट को पहले उतार खाली हो, तभी तो ज्ञान मिलेगा राजा ने मुकुट भी उतार कर महात्मा जी को दे दिया, राजा बोला अब बताइए
महात्मा जी ने कहा पहले गुरु जी को प्रणाम तो कर राजा ने महात्मा जी को हाथ उठा कर तीन बार प्रणाम कीया राजा ने कहा अब तो बता दीजिए महात्मा जी ने कहा अब भी कुछ बताने को शेष बचा है क्या तेरी समझ मे अभी तक नही आया राजा बोला क्या मतलब महात्मा जी ने कहा देख दो मिनट पहले में तेरे दरबार मे आया था तू ऊँचे सिंघासन पर बैठा था मुकुट तेरे सिर पर था और में तुझे नीचे खड़े हो कर हाथ उठा कर प्रणाम कर रहा था।
लेकिन अब ठीक दो मिनट बाद में सिंघासन पर बैठा हूँ मुकुट मेरे सिर पर है और तू नीचे खड़े हो कर मुझे प्रणाम कर रहा है भगवान बस यही करता है, पल में राजा को रंक कर देता है और रंक को राजा कर देता है ये काम सिर्फ भगवान कर सकता है तू नही।
Once a king asked his court ministers, I do all the work of the subjects, I give them food, I give them employment, I help them get their daughters married, I help them in security, I do everything. Then why do these people perform Aarti of God, why don’t they worship me and perform my Aarti. Then what other work is there which only God can do? I cannot do it. Tell me the works of God.
The ministers said, Maharaj, only a saint or Mahatma can answer this question, only he has acquaintance with God. The king said, go and bring some Mahatma to the court who can answer this question of mine.
Mahatmas were discovered in the entire state. There was a hut of a Siddha Mahatma on the border of the state. The ministers went and asked Mahatma ji to answer the king’s question. Mahatma ji said, I will personally come to the court tomorrow and answer the king. The ministers came back and informed the king that tomorrow Mahatma ji himself will come to the court and answer your question.
The next day, Mahatma ji reached the court and after seeing the king, he raised his hands and saluted him thrice, as is a rule of the royal court. The king asked his question to Mahatma ji. Mahatma ji said, “King, I can answer your question but you don’t know how to ask.” The king said, “What is the meaning?” Mahatma ji said that it means that the one from whom knowledge is taken is the Guru, and the Guru is always placed on a high seat.
But here you yourself are sitting on a high pedestal. First give me your seat, the king was thinking that if the Mahatma did not get down from the seat later… But on the persuasion of the ministers, the king gave his seat to the Mahatma, the king said, now tell me Guru ji, the Mahatma said, first remove this crown of ego and empty it, only then you will get knowledge. The king took off the crown and gave it to the Mahatma, the king said, now tell me.
Mahatma ji said, first pay your respects to Guru ji. The king raised his hands and saluted Mahatma ji three times. The king said, now tell me. Mahatma ji said, is there still something left to tell? Have you not understood yet? The king said what does it mean? Mahatma ji said, look, I had come to your court two minutes ago. You were sitting on a high throne, the crown was on your head and I was standing below you and paying respects to you with raised hands.
But now exactly two minutes later, I am sitting on the throne, the crown is on my head and you are standing below me and are paying obeisance to me. God does just this, in a moment he transforms a king into a pauper and turns a pauper into a king. Only God can do this, not you.
