भक्त भगवान् के मिलन की अपेक्षा भगवान् के भजन को अधिक प्रिय समझता है। भजन जब जीवन बन जाता है तब उसके बिना रहा नहीं जाता है। कोई कहे भी के छोड़ दो तब कहेंगे कि छोड़े कैसे रहा नहीं जाता है।
चैतन्य महाप्रभु के शिष्यों में एक सज्जन थे। उनका नाम-जप का इतना अभ्यास था, उनकी जीभ इतनी अभ्यस्त हो गयी थी और उनको इतना मजा-आनन्द आता था कि सोने में भी उनका नाम जप होता रहता था। जब नींद में भी जप हो तो जाग्रत अवस्था में क्यों न हो। एक दिन वह जंगल में शौच के लिये गये। उनका नाम जप चल रहा था। एक सज्जन उनके पीछे हो लिये। जो दोष देखने वाले होते हैं, उनका काम ही यही होता है। ऐसा मैंने भी देखा है कि जब ध्यान करते हैं तब कई लोग कहते हैं कि अमुक-अमुक व्यक्ति सो रहा था, मैंने देखा है। मैंने पूछा कि आप क्या कर रहे थे ? दूसरे के दोष बिना हुए और बिना जाने-समझे कहने में उन्हें आनन्द मिलता है। खैर, उस व्यक्ति ने आकर महाप्रभु से कहा- महाराज ! यह आदमी इतना गन्दा है कि शौच करते हुए भी भगवान् का नाम लेता है। महाप्रभु ने कहा- ऐसा करता है ? उसने कहा- हाँ, ऐसा करया है। महाप्रभु ने कहा- उसे बुलाओ। वे सज्जन आये तब महाप्रभु ने कहा- यह कह रहा है कि तुम शौच करते हुए भी भगवान् का नाम लेते हो। वे बोले- हाँ ऐसा करता हूँ। महाप्रभु ने कहा- ऐसा नहीं करना चाहिये। उन्होंने कहा-ठीक है। फिर दूसरे दिन जब वे महात्मा शौच को गये तब फिर वह गया और देखा कि वे शौच कर रहे हैं और जीभ पकड़े हुए बैठे हैं। उसने आकर फिर महाप्रभु से कहा- महाराज ! वह तो अत्यन्त भ्रष्ट है। कल तो केवल बोल ही रहा था परन्तु आज तो शौच करते हुए हाथ-मुख में ड़ाले हुए था। महाप्रभु ने कहा-ऐसी बात है तब उसे बुलाओ। वह आया तो महाप्रभु ने कहा-ये कह रहे हैं कि तुम शौच करते हुए हाथ मुँह में हाथ रखे थे। उन्होंने कहा- महाराज ! ये ठीक कह रहे हैं। परन्तु आपने ही तो कहा था कि शौच करते समय नाम मत लेना।मेरी जीभ मानती ही नहीं तो मैं क्या करूँ ? आपकी आज्ञा थी इसलिये जीभ पकड़कर बैठा था। महाप्रभु ने कहा-अब तुम जाओ और हमेशा जप किया करो।
इस प्रकार जप जिसके जीवन का स्वभाव बन जाता है वह भजन है। भगवान नाम सिमरन नमन और वन्दन जिस दिल में बैठ जाते हैं उसके लिए हर स्थान मन्दिर है। वह भगवान को भजते हुए मन्दिर और मुर्ति से ऊपर उठ जाते हैं। उनके लिए हर स्थान मन्दिर है। अगर भजन न रहे तो जीवन न रहे। भगवान् की स्मृति ही जीवन है।
The devotee considers the worship of the Lord more dear than the union of the Lord. When the hymn becomes life, it cannot be lived without it. Even if someone says to leave, then they will say that how can they not be left. One of the disciples of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was a gentleman. He had so much practice of chanting his name, his tongue had become so accustomed and he used to enjoy and enjoy so much that he used to chant his name even in sleep. When there is chanting even in sleep, why not in the waking state? One day he went to the forest for defecation. His name was being chanted. A gentleman followed them. This is the work of those who see faults. I have also seen that when meditating, many people say that such and such person was sleeping, I have seen it. I asked what were you doing? They find joy in speaking without the fault of others and without knowing it. Well, that person came and said to Mahaprabhu – Maharaj! This man is so dirty that even while defecating, he takes the name of the Lord. Mahaprabhu said – does it do this? He said- Yes, he has done so. Mahaprabhu said – call him. When those gentlemen came, Mahaprabhu said – It is saying that you take the name of God even while defecating. He said – yes I do. Mahaprabhu said – this should not be done. He said- OK. Then the next day when the Mahatma went to the toilet, he went again and saw that he was defecating and was sitting holding his tongue. He came again and said to Mahaprabhu – Maharaj! He is very corrupt. Yesterday he was only speaking but today he was putting his hands and mouth while defecating. Mahaprabhu said – If it is such a thing, then call him. When he came, Mahaprabhu said – He is saying that you kept your hands in your mouth while defecating. He said- Sir! They are right. But it was you who said that do not take the name while defecating. If my tongue does not obey, what should I do? Because of your order, I was sitting holding my tongue. Mahaprabhu said – now you go and chant always. Thus chanting becomes the nature of one’s life, that is Bhajan. Every place is a temple for the heart in which God’s name, Simran, worship and worship sit. He rises above the temple and the idol while worshiping the Lord. Every place is a temple for them. If there is no bhajan, there will be no life. The memory of God is life.
