उत्तम भक्त वही होता है जो अपनी प्रशंसा को प्रभु चरणों में समर्पित कर दे और निंदा को अपनी गाँठ में इस प्रण के साथ रखले कि इस निंदा को प्रशंसा में अवश्य बदलूंगा और भगवान को भेंट चढ़ाऊंगा।
एक बार भगवान श्रीराम जी ने भरतजी की प्रशंसा की तो उन्होंने कहा: प्रशंसा तो आपकी होनी चाहिए क्योंकि मुझे आपकी छत्रछाया मिली हुई है । इसके अलावा आप अपने स्वभाव से किसी भी जीव में दोष देखते ही नहीं, इसलिए मेरे भी सिर्फ गुण ही आपको दिखते हैं।
भगवान श्रीरामजी ने कहा- चलो मान लिया कि मुझे किसी का दोष देखना नहीं आता, पर गुण देखना तो आता है? इसलिए कहता हूँ कि तुम गुणों का अक्षय कोष हो।
भरतजी बोले-प्रभु यदि तोता बहुत बढ़िया श्लोक पढ़ने लगे और बन्दर बहुत सुन्दर नाचने लगे तो यह बन्दर या तोते की विशेषता है अथवा पढ़ाने और नचानेवाले की? भगवान ने कहा- पढ़ाने और नचानेवाले की।
भरतजी बोले- मैं उसी तोते और बन्दर की तरह हूँ। यदि मुझमें कोई विशेषता दिखाई देती है तो पढ़ाने और नचाने वाले तो आप ही हैं, इसलिए यह प्रशंसा आपको ही अर्पित है।
भगवान ने कहा- भरत,इसका मतलब प्रशंसा तुमने लौटा दी।
भरतजी बोले- प्रभु, प्रशंसा पचा लेना सबके वश का नहीं। यह अजीर्ण पैदा कर देता है लेकिन आप इस प्रशंसा को पचाने में बड़े निपुण हैं। अनादिकाल से भक्त आपकी स्तुति कर रहे हैं, पर आपको तो कभी अहंकार हुआ ही नहीं। इसलिए यह प्रशंसा आपके चरण कमलों में अर्पित है।
इससे स्पष्ट होता है कि प्रशंसा अच्छी है किंतु कई लोगों को अपनी प्रशंसा सुनकर अहंकार हो जाता है कम लोग ही अपनी प्रशंसा को पचा पाते हैं ।

The best devotee is the one who surrenders his praise at the feet of God and keeps the criticism in his knot with the vow that he will definitely convert this criticism into praise and offer it to God.
Once Lord Shri Ram praised Bharatji, he said: The praise should be yours because I have received your protection. Apart from this, by your nature you do not see faults in any living being, hence you also see only my qualities.
Lord Shri Ramji said- Let us accept that I do not know how to see anyone’s faults, but I know how to see their qualities? That’s why I say that you are an inexhaustible treasure of qualities.
Bharatji said – Lord, if the parrot starts reciting very good verses and the monkey starts dancing very beautifully, then is it the specialty of the monkey or the parrot or of the one teaching and dancing? God said- Of the one who teaches and makes one dance.
Bharatji said- I am like the parrot and the monkey. If any specialty is visible in me then you are the one who teaches me and makes me dance, hence this praise is dedicated to you only.
God said- Bharat, it means you have returned the praise.
Bharatji said – Lord, it is not in everyone’s power to digest praise. It causes indigestion but you are very adept at digesting this praise. Devotees have been praising you since time immemorial, but you have never had any ego. Therefore this praise is offered at your lotus feet. This makes it clear that praise is good but many people become arrogant after hearing their praise and very few people are able to digest their praise.
