गोवर्धन पूजा की पौराणिक कथा के अनुसार द्वापर युग में एक बार देवराज इंद्र को अपने ऊपर अभिमान हो गया था। इंद्र का अभिमान चूर करने के लिए भगवान श्री कृष्ण ने एक अद्भुत लीला रची। श्री कृष्ण में देखा कि एक दिन सभी बृजवासी उत्तम पकवान बना रहे थे और किसी पूजा की तैयारी में व्यस्त थे। इसे देखते हुए कृष्ण जी ने माता यशोदा से पूछा कि यह किस बात की तैयारी हो रही है?
कृष्ण की बातें सुनकर यशोदा माता ने बताया कि इंद्रदेव की सभी ग्राम वासी पूजा करते हैं जिससे गांव में ठीक से वर्षा होती रहे और कभी भी फसल खराब न हो और अन्न धन बना रहे। उस समय लोग इंद्र देव को प्रसन्न करने के लिए अन्नकूट (अन्नकूट का महत्व)चढ़ाते थे। यशोदा मइया ने कृष्ण जी को यह भी बताया कि इंद्र देव की कृपा से ही अन्न की पैदावार होती है और उनसे गायों को चारा मिलता है।
इस बात पर श्री कृष्ण ने कहा कि फिर इंद्र देव की जगह गोवर्धन पर्वत की पूजा होनी चाहिए क्योंकि गायों को चार वहीं से मिलता है। इंद्रदेव तो कभी प्रसन्न नहीं होते हैं और न ही दर्शन देते हैं। इस बात पर बृज के लोग इंद्र देव की जगह गोवर्धन पर्वत की पूजा करने लगे। यह देखकर इंद्र देव क्रोधित हुए और उन्होंने मूसलाधार वर्षा शुरू कर दी। इंद्रदेव ने इतनी वर्षा की कि उससे बृज वासियों को फसल के साथ काफी नुकसान हो गया।
ब्रजवासियों को परेशानी में देखकर श्री कृष्ण ने अपनी कनिष्ठा उंगली पर पूरा गोवर्धन पर्वत उठा लिया और सभी ब्रजवासियों को अपने गाय और बछड़े समेत पर्वत के नीचे शरण लेने के लिए कहा। इस बात पर इंद्र कृष्ण की यह लीला देखकर और क्रोधित हो गए और उन्होंने वर्षा की गति को और ज्यादा तीव्र कर दिया। तब श्री कृष्ण ने सुदर्शन चक्र से कहा कि आप पर्वत के ऊपर विराजमान होकर वर्षा की गति को नियंत्रित करें और शेषनाग से कहा आप मेड़ बनाकर पानी को पर्वत की ओर आने से रोकें।
इंद्र लगातार सात दिन तक वर्षा करते रहे तब ब्रह्मा जी ने इंद्र से कहा कि श्री कृष्ण भगवान विष्णु के अवतार हैं और उन्हें कृष्ण जी की पूजा की सलाह दी। ब्रह्मा जी की बात सुनकर इंद्र ने श्री कृष्ण से क्षमा मांगी और उनकी पूजा करके अन्नकूट का 56 तरह का भोग लगाया। तभी से गोवर्घन पर्वत पूजा की जाने लगी और श्री कृष्ण को प्रसाद में 56 भोग चढ़ाया जाने लगा।
गोवर्धन पर्वत गोबर का क्यों बनाया जाता है
ऐसी मान्यता है कि श्री कृष्ण को गायों से अत्यंत प्रेम था और वो गायों तथा बछड़ों की सेवा किया करते थे। यह भी माना जाता है कि गाय का गोबर अत्यंत पवित्र होता है, इसलिए इसी से गोवर्धन पर्वत बनाना और इसका पूजन करना फलदायी माना जाता है। इस दिन गोबर से गोवर्धन पर्वत की आकृति बनाई जाती है और इसके चारों कोनों में करवा की सींकें लगाईं जाती हैं। इसके भीतर कई अन्य आकृतियां भी बनाई जाती हैं और इसकी पूजा की जाती है।

ऐसा माना जाता है कि इस दिन जो भी गोवर्धन की इस कथा का पाठ करता है और श्रद्धा पूर्वक गाय के गोबर से बने पर्वत की पूजा करता है, उसकी सभी मनोकामनाओं की पूर्ति होती।

According to the legend of Govardhan Puja, once in Dwapar Yuga, Lord Indra was proud of himself. To break the pride of Indra, Lord Shri Krishna created a wonderful Leela. Saw in Shri Krishna that one day all the Brijwasis were preparing excellent dishes and were busy preparing for some worship. Seeing this, Krishna ji asked Mother Yashoda what is being prepared for this?
After listening to Krishna, Yashoda Mata told that Indradev is worshiped by all the villagers so that it rains properly in the village and never spoils the crop and keeps food and money. At that time people used to offer Annakoot (significance of Annakoot) to please Indra Dev. Yashoda Maiya also told Krishna that food is produced only by the grace of Indra Dev and cows get fodder from him.
On this, Shri Krishna said that then Govardhan mountain should be worshiped instead of Indra Dev because cows get four from there. Indradev is never pleased nor gives darshan. On this matter, the people of Brij started worshiping Govardhan Parvat instead of Indra Dev. Seeing this, Indra became furious and started raining heavily. Indradev rained so much that it caused a lot of damage to the people of Brij along with their crops.
Seeing the Brajwasis in trouble, Shri Krishna lifted the entire Govardhan mountain on his little finger and asked all the Brajwasis to take shelter under the mountain, including their cow and calf. On seeing this Leela of Krishna, Indra became more angry and he made the speed of the rain more and more intense. Then Shri Krishna told Sudarshan Chakra that you should control the speed of rain by sitting on top of the mountain and asked Sheshnag to make a bund and stop the water from coming towards the mountain.
When Indra continued to rain for seven days, Brahma ji told Indra that Shri Krishna was an incarnation of Lord Vishnu and advised him to worship Krishna. After listening to Brahma ji, Indra apologized to Shri Krishna and worshiped him and offered 56 types of food to Annakoot. Since then the Govarghan mountain was worshipped and 56 bhog was offered to Shri Krishna in the prasad.
Why Govardhan Parvat is made of cow dung
It is believed that Shri Krishna had great love for cows and used to serve cows and calves. It is also believed that cow dung is very sacred, hence making Govardhan mountain from it and worshiping it is considered fruitful. On this day, the shape of Govardhan mountain is made from cow dung and karva sinks are placed in its four corners. Many other figures are also made within it and it is worshipped.
