नीलकंठ तुम नीले रहियो,
दूध-भात का भोजन करियो,
हमरी बात राम से कहियो’,
इस लोकोक्ति के अनुसार नीलकंठ पक्षी को भगवान का प्रतिनिधि माना गया है। दशहरा पर्व पर इस पक्षी के दर्शन को शुभ और भाग्य को जगाने वाला माना जाता है। जिसके चलते दशहरे के दिन हर व्यक्ति इसी आस में छत पर जाकर आकाश को निहारता है कि उन्हें नीलकंठ पक्षी के दर्शन हो जाए। ताकि साल भर उनके यहां शुभ कार्य का सिलसिला चलता रहे।
विजयादशमी के दिन नीलकंठ के दर्शन होने से घर के धन-धान्य में वृद्धि होती है, और फलदायी एवं शुभ कार्य घर में अनवरत् होते रहते हैं। सुबह से लेकर शाम तक किसी वक्त नीलकंठ दिख जाए तो वह देखने वाले के लिए शुभ होता है। लोकोक्ति है श्रीराम ने इस पक्षी के दर्शन के बाद ही रावण पर विजय प्राप्त की थी। विजय दशमी का पर्व जीत का पर्व है। बरसों से जुड़ी है। लंका जीत के बाद जब भगवान राम को ब्राह्मण हत्या का पाप लगा था। भगवान राम ने अपने भाई लक्ष्मण के साथ मिलकर भगवान शिव की पूजा अर्चना की एवं ब्राह्मण हत्या के पाप से खूद को मुक्त कराया। तब भगवान शिव नीलकंठ पक्षी के रुप में धरती पर पधारे थे। नीलकंठ अर्थात् जिसका गला नीला हो।जनश्रुति और धर्मशास्त्रों के मुताबिक भगवान शंकर ही नीलकंठ है। इस पक्षी को पृथ्वी पर भगवान शिव का प्रतिनिधि और स्वरूप दोनों माना गया है। नीलकंठ पक्षी भगवान शिव का ही रुप है। भगवान शिव नीलकंठ पक्षी का रूप धारण कर धरती पर विचरण करते हैं।

The festival of Vijay Dashami is the festival of victory. Been associated for years. After the victory of Lanka, when Lord Rama felt the sin of killing a Brahmin. Lord Rama along with his brother Lakshmana worshiped Lord Shiva and freed himself from the sin of killing a Brahmin. Then Lord Shiva came to earth in the form of Neelkanth bird. Neelkanth means one whose throat is blue. According to popular belief and religious scriptures, Lord Shankar is the only Neelkanth. This bird is considered both the representative and form of Lord Shiva on earth. Neelkanth bird is the form of Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva takes the form of a Neelkanth bird and roams the earth.
