नरक चतुर्दशी को मुक्ति पाने वाला पर्व कहा जाता है। इस दिन भगवान कृष्ण ने नरकासुर का वध किया था। इसलिए इस चतुर्दशी का नाम नरक चतुर्दशी पड़ा। इस दिन सूर्योदय से पहले उठने और स्थान करने का महत्त्व है। इससे मनुष्य को यम लोक का दर्शन नहीं करना पड़ता है।

दिवाली से एक दिन पहले आज देश भर में छोटी दिवाली मनाई जा रही है जिसे नरक चतुर्दशी के नाम से भी जाना जाता है। इस दिन भगवान कृष्ण, यमराज और बजरंगबली की पूजा करने का विधान है। मान्यता है कि इस दिन पूजा करने से मनुष्य नरक में मिलने वाली यातनाओं से बच जाता है साथ ही अकाल मृत्यु से रक्षा होती है। आइए जानते हैं नरक चतुर्दशी के बारे में अन्य खास बातें क्यों कहते हैं छोटी दिवाली को नरक चतुर्दशी
नरकासुर का आतंक
विष्णु और श्रीमद्भागवत पुराण के अनुसार नरकासुर नामक असुर ने अपनी शक्ति से देवी-देवताओं और मानवों को परेशान कर रखा था। असुर ने संतों के साथ 16 हजार स्त्रियों को भी बंदी बनाकर रखा था। जब उसका अत्याचार बहुत बढ़ गया तो देवता और ऋषि-मुनियों ने भगवान श्रीकृष्ण की शरण में आकर कहा कि इस नरकासुर का अंत कर पृथ्वी से पाप का भार कम करें।
नरकासुर को मिला था यह शाप
भगवान श्रीकृष्ण ने उन्हें नरकासुर से मुक्ति दिलाने का आश्वासन दिया लेकिन नरकासुर को एक स्त्री के हाथों मरने का शाप था इसलिए भगवान कृष्ण ने अपनी पत्नी सत्यभामा को सारथी बनाया और उनकी सहायता से नरकासुर का वध किया। जिस दिन नरकासुर का अंत हुआ, उस दिन कार्तिक मास के कृष्ण पक्ष की चतुर्दशी थी।
भगवान कृष्ण की 16 हजार पटरानियों का सच
नरकासुर के वध के बाद श्रीकृष्ण ने कन्याओं को बंधन से मुक्त करवाया। मुक्ति के बाद कन्याओं ने भगवान कृष्ण से गुहार लगाई कि समाज अब उन्हें कभी स्वीकार नहीं करेगा, इसके लिए आप कोई उपाय निकालें। हमारा सम्मान वापस दिलवाएं। समाज में इन कन्याओं को सम्मान दिलाने के लिए भगवान कृष्ण ने सत्यभामा के सहयोग से 16 हजार कन्याओं से विवाह कर लिया। 16 हजार कन्याओं को मुक्ति और नरकासुर के वध के उपलक्ष्य में घर-घर दीपदान की परंपरा शुरू हुई।
इसलिए महिलाएं करती हैं 16 श्रृंगार
भगवान कृष्ण ने इस दिन 16 हजार कन्याओं का उद्धार किया, इसी खुशी में इस दिन महिलाएं 16 श्रृंगार करती हैं। नरक चतुर्दशी को रूप चतुर्दशी भी कहते हैं। इस दिन जल में औषधि मिलाकर स्नान करने और 16 ऋृंगार करने से रूप सौन्दर्य और सौभाग्य बढ़ता है ऐसी मान्यताएं कहती हैं।

यह काम करने से नहीं जाना पड़ता यम लोक
नरक चतुर्दशी के दिन इस दिन सूर्योदय से पहले उठने और स्नान करने का महत्व है। इससे मनुष्य को यम लोक का दर्शन नहीं करना पड़ता है। कार्तिक मास में तेल नहीं लगाना चाहिए, फिर भी इस तिथि विशेष को शरीर में तेल लगाकर स्नान करना चाहिए। स्नान के बाद शुद्ध वस्त्र पहनकर, तिलक लगाकर दक्षिणाभिमुख होकर दिए गए मंत्रों से प्रत्येक नाम से तिलयुक्त तीन-तीन तिलांजलि देनी चाहिए। यह यम-तर्पण कहलाता है। इससे वर्ष भर के पाप नष्ट हो जाते हैं।

शाम को ऐसे जलाएं दीप
संध्या के समय देवताओं का पूजन कर दीपदान करना चाहिए। नरक निवृत्ति के लिए चार बत्तियों वाला दीपक पूर्व दिशा में मुख कर के घर के मुख्य द्वार पर रखना चाहिए। मंदिरों, रसोईघर, स्नानघर, देववृक्षों के नीचे, नदियों के किनारे, चहारदीवारी, बगीचे, गोशाला आदि स्थान पर दीपक जलाना चाहिए। विधि-विधान से पूजा करने वाले सभी पापों से मुक्त हो स्वर्ग को प्राप्त करते हैं।
