सनातन धर्म में नारियल का विशेष महत्व है।नारियल के
बिना कोई भी धार्मिक कार्यक्रम संपन्न नहीं होता है।
नारियल से जुडी एक पौराणिक कथा भी प्रचलित है,जो जिसके अनुसार नारियल का इस धरती पर अवतरण ऋषि विश्वामित्र द्वारा किया गया था।
यह कहानी प्राचीन काल के एक राजा सत्यव्रत से जुड़ी है। सत्यव्रत एक प्रतापी राजा थे, जिनका ईश्वर में सम्पूर्ण विश्वास था। उनके पास सब कुछ था लेकिन उनके मन की एक इच्छा थी जिसे वे किसी भी रूप में पूरा करना चाहते थे।वे चाहते थे की वे किसी भी प्रकार से पृथ्वीलोक से स्वर्गलोक जा सकें। स्वर्गलोक की सुंदरता उन्हें अपनी ओर आकर्षित करती थी, किंतु वहां कैसे जाना है,यह सत्यव्रत नहीं जानते थे।
एक बार ऋषि विश्वामित्र तपस्या करने के लिए अपने घर से काफी दूर निकल गए थे और लम्बे समय से वापस नहीं आए। उनकी अनुपस्थिति में क्षेत्र में सूखा पड़ा गया और उनका परिवार भूखा-प्यासा भटक रहा था। तब राजा सत्यव्रत ने उनके परिवार की सहायता की और उनकी देख-रेख की जिम्मेदारी ली।जब ऋषि विश्वामित्र वापस लौटे तो उन्हें परिवार वालों ने राजा की अच्छाई बताई। वे राजा से मिलने उनके दरबार पहुंचे और उनका धन्यवाद किया। धन्यवाद के रूप में राजा ने ऋषि विश्वामित्र द्वारा उन्हें एक वर देने के लिए निवेदन किया। ऋषि विश्वामित्र ने भी उन्हें आज्ञा दी।
तब राजा बोले की वो स्वर्गलोक जाना चाहते हैं,तो क्या ऋषि विश्वामित्र अपनी शक्तियों का सहारा लेकर उनके लिए स्वर्ग जाने का मार्ग बना सकते हैं?अपने परिवार की सहायता का उपकार मानते हुए ऋषि विश्वामित्र ने जल्द ही एक ऐसा मार्ग तैयार किया जो सीधा स्वर्गलोक को जाता था।
राजा सत्यव्रत खुश हो गए और उस मार्ग पर चलते हुए जैसे ही स्वर्गलोक के पास पहुंचे ही थे,कि स्वर्गलोक के देवता इन्द्र ने उन्हें नीचे की ओर ढकेल दिया। धरती पर गिरते ही राजा ऋषि विश्वामित्र के पास पहुंचे और रोते हुए सारी घटना का वर्णन करने लगे। देवताओं के इस प्रकार के व्यवहार से ऋषि विश्वामित्र भी क्रोधित हो गए, परन्तु अंत में स्वर्गलोक के देवताओं से वार्तालाप करके आपसी सहमति से एक हल निकाला गया। इसके अनुसार राजा सत्यव्रत के लिए अलग से एक स्वर्गलोक का निर्माण करने का आदेश दिया गया !
ये नया स्वर्गलोक पृथ्वी एवं असली स्वर्गलोक के मध्य में स्थित होगा, ताकि ना ही राजा को कोई परेशानी हो और ना ही देवी-देवताओं को किसी कठिनाई का सामना करना पड़े। राजा सत्यव्रत भी इस सुझाव से बेहद प्रसन्न हुए, किन्तु ना जाने ऋषि विश्वामित्र को एक चिंता ने घेरा हुआ था।उन्हें यह बात सता रही थी कि धरती और स्वर्गलोक के बीच होने के कारण कहीं हवा के ज़ोर से यह नया स्वर्गलोक डगमगा ना जाए। यदि ऐसा हुआ तो राजा
फिर से धरती पर आ गिरेंगे। इसका हल निकालते हुए ऋषि विश्वामित्र ने नए स्वर्गलोक के ठीक नीचे एक खम्भे का निर्माण किया, जिसने उसे सहारा दिया।
माना जाता है की यही खम्भा समय आने पर एक पेड़ के मोटे तने के रूप में बदल गया और राजा सत्यव्रत का सिर एक फल बन गया। इसी पेड़ के तने को नारियल का पेड़ और राजा के सिर को नारियल कहा जाने लगा।इसीलिए आज के समय में भी नारियल का पेड़ काफी ऊंचाई पर लगता है।इस कथा के अनुसार सत्यव्रत को समय आने पर एक ऐसे व्यक्ति की उपाधि दी गई ‘जो ना ही इधर का है और ना ही उधर का। यानी कि एक ऐसा इंसान जो दो धुरों के बीच में लटका हुआ है।

A mythological story related to coconut is also prevalent, according to which coconut was descended on this earth by sage Vishwamitra.
This story is related to Satyavrat, a king of ancient times. Satyavrat was a majestic king who had full faith in God. He had everything but he had a desire in his mind which he wanted to fulfill in any form. He wanted that he could go from earth to heaven by any means. The beauty of heaven attracted him, but Satyavrat did not know how to go there.
Once sage Vishwamitra had gone far away from his home to do penance and did not return for a long time. In his absence, there was drought in the area and his family was wandering hungry and thirsty. Then King Satyavrat helped his family and took the responsibility of looking after them. When sage Vishwamitra returned, the family members told him about the goodness of the king. They reached the court to meet the king and thanked him. As a thank you, the king requested sage Vishwamitra to grant him a boon. Sage Vishwamitra also ordered him.
Then the king said that he wanted to go to heaven, so could sage Vishwamitra make a way for him to go to heaven with the help of his powers? Acknowledging the help of his family, sage Vishwamitra soon prepared a path that would lead directly to heaven. Used to go to
King Satyavrat became happy and walking on that path, as soon as he reached near heaven, Indra, the god of heaven, pushed him down. As soon as he fell on the earth, the king went to sage Vishwamitra and started crying and describing the whole incident. Rishi Vishwamitra also got angry with this kind of behavior of the gods, but in the end a solution was found by mutual consent after talking to the gods of heaven. According to this, a separate heaven was ordered to be built for King Satyavrat.
This new heaven will be situated in the middle of the earth and the real heaven, so that neither the king nor the gods and goddesses will face any difficulty. King Satyavrat was also very pleased with this suggestion, but sage Vishwamitra was surrounded by a worry. He was worried that this new heaven might not be shaken by the force of the wind due to being between the earth and heaven. If this happens then the king Will fall again on the earth. Resolving this, sage Vishwamitra constructed a pillar just below the new heaven, which supported it.
It is believed that when the time came, this pillar turned into a thick trunk of a tree and King Satyavrat’s head became a fruit. The trunk of this tree came to be known as the coconut tree and the king’s head as coconut. That is why even today the coconut tree grows at a great height. According to this legend, Satyavrat was given the title of such a person when the time came. Which is neither from here nor from there. That is, a person who is hanging between two axles.
