राजकविकी चतुराई
अकबरके सेनापति मानसिंहके मनमें एक बार श्रीलंकापर चढ़ाईकर उसे जीतनेका भूत सवार हो गया। एक तो राजपूत, दूसरे जवान। बहुत प्रकारसे लोगोंने उन्हें समझाया, पर सब बेअसर। युद्धके लिये प्रयाण विषयक तैयारियाँ होने लगीं। अन्तमें कुछ वृद्धजनोंने राजकविको इस दिशामें कुछ प्रयास करनेका अनुरोध किया। कविवरने समय आनेपर कुछ करनेका आश्वासन दिया। प्रस्थानहेतु मुहूर्त आनेपर कूच करनेकी तैयारी होने लगी। प्रस्थानका बिगुल बज गया। राजा मानसिंह घोड़ेपर सवार होने जा ही रहे थे कि राजकवि सामने आ गये। उन्होंने तत्काल एक सोरठा पढ़ा
रघुपति कीन्हो दान, विप्र विभीषन मानि कै।
मान महीपति मान, दियो दान किमि लीजिबो ॥
‘हे राजा मानसिंह! मान जाइये। आप यह क्या करने जा रहे हैं ? लंकाको तो आपके पूर्वज श्रीराम विप्र विभीषणको दान कर चुके हैं। क्या दी हुई वस्तुको लेनेका आपका प्रयास युक्तिसंगत है ?”
मानसिंह लजा गये, उनके पैर ठिठक गये। सेना निरर्थक तबाहीसे बच गयी।
