‘गाड़ी आनेमें केवल आधा घंटा रह गया है। लकड़ीके पुलपर गाड़ी गिर पड़ेगी और अगणित प्राणियोंके प्राण चले जायँगे बेटी!’ बुढ़ियाने लड़की से कहा। वह अभी-अभी धड़ाकेकी आवाज सुनकर पुल देखने गयी थी जो भयंकर हिमपातसे टूट गया था। गाड़ीको दूर ही रोकनेका उपाय सोचने लगी। वहपश्चिमी वरजीनियाकी एक निर्जन घाटीमें झोंपड़ी बनाकर रहती थी। दूर-दूरतक चारों ओर उजाड़ था । बस्ती उस स्थानसे कोसों दूर थी बूढ़ी स्त्रीने साहससे काम लिया। आधी रातकी भयावनी नीरवतामें भी वह चारपाईसे उठ बैठी। रेलगाड़ी आनेका समय निकट | देखकर उसका हृदय काँप रहा था ।उसने सोचा कि प्रकाशके द्वारा ड्राइवरको सूचना दी जा सकती है। जोर-जोरसे चिल्लानेपर चलती गाड़ीमें ड्राइवर कुछ भी नहीं सुन सकेगा, पर प्रकाश देखकर गाड़ी रोक सकता है। बुढ़ियाने मोमबत्तीकी ओर देखा; वह आधीसे अधिक जल चुकी थी; उसके प्रकाशका भयंकर आँधी और जलवृष्टिके समय कुछ भरोसा भी नहीं किया जा सकता था । घरमें शीतनिवारणके लिये जलायी गयी आग ठंडी हो गयी थी और लकड़ियाँ जल चुकी थीं । घरमें गरीबीके कारण कोई दूसरा सामान नहीं रह गया था जिसे जलाकर वह प्रकाश करे और ड्राइवरको सावधान करे।
अचानक बुढ़ियाकी दृष्टि चारपाईकी सिरई-पाटी और गोड़ोंपर गयी; उसने शीघ्र ही अपनी लड़कीकीसहायतासे उनको चीर डाला और रेलकी लाइनपर रख दिया। दियासलाईसे उसने आग जलायी; रेलगाड़ी सीटी देती आ पहुँची। थोड़ी दूरपर प्रकाशपुञ्ज देखकर ड्राइवरने भयकी आशङ्कासे चाल धीमी कर दी। गाड़ी घटनास्थलपर आ पहुँची; ड्राइवरने टूटा पुल देखा और उसके निकट ही उस बुढ़ियाको देखा जिसने एक लकड़ीके टुकड़ेमें अपनी लाल ओढ़नीका एक टुकड़ा फाड़कर लटका रखा था सूचना देनेके लिये और उसकी छोटी लड़की बगलमें खड़ी होकर जलती लकड़ी हाथमें लेकर प्रकाश दिखा रही थी।
गाड़ी रुक गयी और बुढ़ियाके अद्भुत पराक्रम और सत्कर्मसे सैकड़ों प्राणियोंके प्राण बच गये।

The vehicle arrived at the scene; The driver saw the broken bridge and near it saw the old woman who had torn a piece of her red cover hanging on a piece of wood to give information and her little girl was standing next to it showing light with burning wood in hand.
The vehicle stopped and the lives of hundreds of animals were saved due to the amazing bravery and good deed of the old lady.
