कहा जाता है कि बचपनमें पण्डित बोपदेवजीकी स्मरणशक्ति अत्यन्त क्षीण थी। वे बहुत परिश्रम करते थे, किंतु व्याकरणके सूत्र उन्हें कण्ठस्थ नहीं हो पाते थे। उनके सहपाठी उन्हें चिढ़ाया करते। गुरुदेव भी उन्हें झिड़कते थे। इन सबसे दुःखी होकर बोपदेव एक दिन गुरुगृहसे भाग खड़े हुए। वे एक कुके पास जा बैठे। अब अध्ययन छोड़ देनेका उन्होंने विचार कर लिया था।
कुएँपर ग्रामको नारियाँ जल भरने आती थीं कुएँसे जल खींचकर वे घड़ेको पत्थरपर रख देती थीं तनिक देरको और रस्सी समेटकर पीछे घड़ेको उठाती थीं बोपदेवने देखा कि कुएँके मुखपर जो पत्थर है, उसमेंपानी खींचनेकी रस्सीसे कई गड्ढे पड़ गये हैं और जहाँ महिलाएँ घड़ा रखती हैं, वहाँ भी बड़ा रखते-रखते पत्थरमें गड्ढा बन गया है। बोपदेवके मनने कहा-‘जब कोमल रस्सी और मिट्टीका घड़ा बार-बारकी रगड़ये पत्थरमें गड्ढा बना सकते हैं, तब क्या निरन्तर दृढ़ अभ्याससे तुम विद्वान् नहीं हो सकते ?”
बोपदेव वहींसे गुरुगृहमें लौट आये। वे अध्ययनमें जुट गये। सच्ची लगन और दृढ़ अभ्यासके कारण आगे वे प्रसिद्ध विद्वान् हुए। देवगिरिके यादव नरेश महादेवके वे सभापण्डित बने। पाणिनीय व्याकरणकी दुरूहता उन्होंने अनुभव की; इसीलिये मुग्धबोध नामका संस्कृतका सुगम व्याकरण बनाया। सु0 सिं0
It is said that Pandit Bopdevji’s memory power was very weak in his childhood. He worked very hard, but he could not memorize the formulas of grammar. His classmates used to tease him. Gurudev also used to rebuke him. Saddened by all this, Bopdev one day ran away from Gurugriha. They went to a cook and sat down. Now he had thought of leaving the study.
The women of the village used to come to the well to draw water, they used to draw water from the well and put the pitcher on the stone for a while and after collecting the rope used to lift the pitcher behind. By keeping it too big, a hole has been made in the stone. Bopdev’s mind said – ‘When a soft rope and an earthen pot can make a hole in a stone by repeatedly rubbing it, then can’t you become a scholar by constant and persistent practice?’
Bopdev returned to Gurugriha from there. They started studying. He later became a famous scholar due to true dedication and firm practice. He became the sabhapandit of Devgiri’s Yadav king Mahadev.
