गरीबोंकी सेवा
एक बार महात्मा गौतम बुद्धने उपदेश देते हुए कहा-‘देशमें अकाल पड़ा है। लोग अन्न एवं वस्त्रके लिये तरस रहे हैं। उनकी सहायता करना हर मनुष्यका धर्म है। आप लोगंकि शरीरपर जो वस्त्र हैं, उन्हें दानमें दे दें। यह सुनकर कुछ लोग उठकर चले गये। कुछ लोग आपसमें कहने लगे-‘यदि वस्त्र इन्हें दे दें तो हम क्या पहनेंगे ?’ उपदेश समाप्त हुआ। सभी श्रोता चले गये परंतु निरंजन बैठा रहा। वह सोचने लगा- ‘मेरे शरीरपर एक वस्त्र है। अगर मैं अपना वस्त्र दे दूँगा तो नग्न होना पड़ेगा।’ फिर सोचा- ‘मनुष्य बिना वस्त्रके पैदा होता है और बिना वस्त्रके ही चला जाता है। साधु-संन्यासी भी बिना वस्त्रके रहते हैं।’ अतः निरंजनने अपनी धोती दे दी। बुद्धने उसे आशीर्वाद दिया। निरंजन अपने घरकी ओर चल पड़ा। वह खुशीसे चिल्लाकर कह रहा था- ‘मैंने अपने आधे मनको जीत लिया।’
तभी निरंजनने देखा कि दूसरी ओरसे महाराज प्रसेनजित् चले आ रहे हैं। निरंजनकी बात सुनकर उन्होंने उसे पास बुलाया और पूछा—’तुमने अपने आधे मनको जीत लिया, इसका क्या अर्थ है ?’
निरंजनने उत्तर दिया- ‘महाराज! महात्मा गौतम बुद्ध दुखियोंके लिये दानमें वस्त्र माँग रहे थे। यह यदि सुनकर मेरे एक मनने कहा कि शरीरपर पड़ी । धोती दानमें दे दो, परंतु दूसरे मनने कहा कि दोगे तो पहनोगे क्या? आखिर दान देनेवाले मनको विजय हुई। मैंने धोती दानमें दे दी। अब मुझे गरीबोंकी सेवाके सिवा कुछ नहीं चाहिये।’
यह सुनकर राजा प्रसेनजित्ने अपना राजकीय परिधान उतारकर निरंजनको प्रदान कर दिया। निरंजनने उसे भी महात्मा बुद्धके चरणोंमें डाल दिया। बुद्धने निरंजनको हृदयसे लगाते हुए कहा- ‘जो दूसरोंके लिये अपना सब कुछ दे देता है, उसकी बराबरी कोई नहीं कर सकता।’
service to the poor
Once Mahatma Gautam Buddha while giving a sermon said – ‘There is a famine in the country. People are yearning for food and clothes. It is the duty of every human being to help them. Donate the clothes that are on your body. Hearing this, some people got up and left. Some people started saying among themselves – ‘If clothes are given to them, what will we wear?’ The sermon is over. All the listeners left but Niranjan remained seated. He started thinking- ‘I have a cloth on my body. If I give my clothes, I will have to be naked.’ Then thought- ‘Man is born without clothes and goes without clothes. Sages and ascetics also live without clothes.’ So Niranjan gave his dhoti. Buddha blessed him. Niranjan started towards his house. He was shouting happily – ‘I have won half of my hearts.’
Then Niranjan saw that Maharaj Prasenjit was coming from the other side. After listening to Niranjan, he called him near and asked – ‘You have won half of your mind, what does it mean?’
Niranjan replied – ‘ Maharaj! Mahatma Gautam Buddha was asking for clothes in charity for the suffering. Hearing this, one of my mind said that it fell on the body. Donate the dhoti, but the other mind said that if you give it, will you wear it? After all, the donor mind has won. I donated the dhoti. Now I want nothing but to serve the poor.’
Hearing this, King Prasenjitne took off his royal clothes and gave it to Niranjan. Niranjan put him also at the feet of Mahatma Buddha. Buddha hugged Niranjan and said- ‘No one can match the one who gives his everything for others.’
