अर्जुनकी उदारताका अभिमान-भङ्ग

यह प्रसिद्ध है कि कर्ण अपने समयके दानियोंमें सर्वश्रेष्ठ थे। इधर अर्जुनको भी अपनी दानशीलताका बड़ा गर्व था। एक बार भगवान् श्रीकृष्णने अर्जुनके समक्ष ही कर्णकी उदारता एवं याचकमात्रको बिना दिये न लौटानेकी मुक्तकण्ठसे प्रशंसा की। अर्जुन इसे सह न सके। उन्होंने कहा- ‘माधव! आप बार-बार कर्णकी प्रशंसा कर हमारे हृदयको ठेस पहुँचा रहे हैं। मैं समझता हूँ आपको मेरी दानशीलताका ज्ञान ही नहीं है; अन्यथा मेरे सामने ही आप इस प्रकारकी बात बार-बार न कहते।’ भगवान् चुप रहे।

आखिर एक दिन इसकी परीक्षाका भी अवसर आ ही गया। एक दिन एक ब्राह्मण अर्जुनके दरवाजेपर पहुँचा और कहने लगा, ‘धनंजय ! सुना है आपके दरवाजेसे कोई भी याचक लौटकर नहीं जाता। मैं आज बड़े ही धर्मसंकटमें पड़ गया हूँ। मेरी स्त्री आज चल बसी। मरते समय उसने कहा कि ‘मेरी एक प्रार्थना स्वीकार करो; वह यह कि मेरे शरीरका दाह केवल चन्दनकी लकड़ियोंसे ही करना। क्या आप इतने चन्दनकी लकड़ियोंकी व्यवस्था कर सकियेगा?’ अर्जुनने कहा ‘क्यों नहीं। अभी प्रबन्ध होता है।’ और कोठारीको बुलाकर आज्ञा दी कि इन्हें तुरंत पच्चीस मन चन्दनकी लकड़ी तौल दो। दुर्भाग्यवश उस दिन न तो भण्डारमें ही कोई चन्दनकी लकड़ी थी न कहीं बाजारमें ही। अन्तमें कोठारी लाचार होकर अर्जुनके पास आया औरकहने लगा कि ‘महाराज ! चन्दनकी लकड़ीका प्रबन्ध सर्वथा असम्भव है।’ इसपर ब्राह्मणने पूछा ‘तो क्या मैं किसी दूसरेके दरवाजे जाऊँ ?’ अर्जुनने कहा ‘महाराज ! अब तो लाचारी है।’

अब वह ब्राह्मण कर्णके यहाँ पहुँचा। वहाँ भी यही हालत थी। उनका भी कोठारी बाजारसे खाली हाथ लौट आया। ब्राह्मणने कहा ‘तो महाराज! मैं अब चलूँ।’ कर्णने कहा, ‘महाराज! आप नाराज न होइये। मैं अभी आपके काष्ठका प्रबन्ध करता हूँ।’ और देखते-देखते उन्होंने अपने महलके चन्दनके खंभे निकलवाकर उसकी माँग पूरी कर दी। यद्यपि उनका महल ढह गया, तथापि उन्होंने उस ब्राह्मणको लौटाया नहीं। ब्राह्मणने पत्नीका दाह-संस्कार किया। शामको श्रीकृष्ण तथा अर्जुन टहलने निकले। देखा तो एक ब्राह्मण श्मशानपर संकीर्तन कर रहा है। पूछनेपर वह कहने लगा- ‘बस, बार-बार धन्यवाद है उस कर्णको, जिसने आज मेरे संकटको दूर करनेके लिये, अपनी दानकी मनोवृत्तिकी रक्षाके लिये, महलके चन्दनके खंभोंको निकलवाकर सोने से महलको ढहा दिया। भगवान् उसका भला करें।’

अब श्रीकृष्ण अर्जुनकी ओर देखने लगे और बोले- ‘ भाई ! चन्दनके खंभे तो तुम्हारे महलमें भी थे, पर तुम्हें उनकी याद ही नहीं आयी।’ यह देख-सुनकर अर्जुनको मन-ही-मन बड़ी लज्जा आयी।

It is well known that Karna was the best among the donors of his time. Here Arjun was also very proud of his charity. Once in front of Arjuna, Lord Krishna praised Karna’s generosity and not returning the request without giving it. Arjun could not bear it. He said- ‘Madhav! You are hurting our hearts by praising Karna again and again. I understand that you have no knowledge of my charity; Otherwise you would not have said such things again and again in front of me.’ God remained silent.
After all, one day the opportunity to test it also came. One day a Brahmin reached Arjuna’s door and said, ‘ Dhananjay! I have heard that no beggar goes back from your door. Today I am in great trouble. My wife passed away today. While dying he said that ‘Accept one of my prayers; That is to burn my body only with sandalwood. Will you be able to arrange so many sandalwood sticks?’ Arjun said ‘Why not. Now arrangements are made. And calling Kothari, ordered him to immediately weigh twenty-five hearts of sandalwood. Unfortunately, there was neither any sandal wood in the store nor in the market that day. At last Kothari came to Arjun feeling helpless and started saying ‘ Maharaj! Management of sandalwood is absolutely impossible. On this the Brahmin asked, ‘Should I go to someone else’s door?’ Arjun said ‘ Maharaj! Now there is helplessness.
Now that Brahmin reached Karna’s place. It was the same condition there too. His closet also returned empty handed from the market. Brahmin said ‘ So Maharaj! Let me go now.’ Karna said, ‘ Maharaj! Don’t be angry Now I manage your wood.’ And in no time, he fulfilled his demand by getting the sandalwood pillars of his palace removed. Although his palace collapsed, he did not return the Brahmin. The Brahmin cremated his wife. In the evening Shri Krishna and Arjuna went out for a walk. Saw a Brahmin doing sankirtan at the cremation ground. On asking, he started saying- ‘Enough, thanks again and again to that Karna, who today to remove my distress, to protect his charitable attitude, removed the sandalwood pillars of the palace and razed the palace with gold. God bless him.
Now Shri Krishna started looking at Arjuna and said – ‘Brother! Sandalwood pillars were there in your palace too, but you did not remember them at all.’ Seeing and hearing this, Arjun felt very ashamed in his heart.
