शास्त्रीजीका कोट
बात उन दिनोंकी है, जब लालबहादुर शास्त्री केन्द्रीय मन्त्री थे। सादगी और ईमानदारीमें शास्त्रीजी बेजोड़ थे। एक बारकी बात है। प्रधानमन्त्री पण्डित जवाहरलाल नेहरूने उन्हें एक जरूरी कामसे कश्मीर जानेके लिये कहा। शास्त्रीजीने निवेदन किया कि किसी औरको उनकी जगह भेज दिया जाय। नेहरूजीने जब इसका कारण पूछा तो शास्त्रीजी बोले- ‘कश्मीरमें इस समय बेहद ठण्ड पड़ रही है और मेरे पास गर्म कोट नहीं है।’ यह सुनकर बहुत इनकार करनेके बावजूद नेहरूजीने अपना एक कोट शास्त्रीजीको दे दिया। शास्त्रीजीने पण्डितजीका कोट पहनकर देखा। वह बहुत लम्बा था और बहुत नीचेतक लटक रहा था। शास्त्रीजी अपने एक मित्रको साथ लेकर एक नया कोट खरीदने बाजार पहुँचे बाजारमें काफी कोट देखे गये, पर मनपसन्द कोट नहीं मिला। वह या तो महँगा इतना होता कि शास्त्रीजी दाम चुकानेवें असमर्थ होते या फिर उसका साइज ऐसा होता कि उनको ठीक नहीं आता। एक दुकानदारने उन्हें एक ऐसे दर्जीका पता दिया, जो सस्ता और अच्छा कोट सिलकर दे सकता था। शास्त्रीजी अपने मित्रके साथ उस दर्शक पास पहुँचे और एक सस्ता कोट सिलनेको दे दिया। शास्त्रीजीके मित्र बोले- ‘आप केन्द्रीय मन्त्री हैं। आप चाहें तो सैकड़ों कीमती कोट आपके पास हो सकते हैं, लेकिन आप एक मामूली कोटके लिये बाजारमें मारे-मारे घूम रहे हैं।’ शास्त्रीजीने मुसकराकर जवाब दिया- ‘भाई। मुझे इतनी तनख्वाह नहीं मिलती कि मैं कीमती कपड़े खरीद सकूँ और फिर मेरे लिये तो देशसेवा ही सबसे बढ़कर है, जो मैं मामूली कपड़ोंमें भी कर सकता है।’ [ श्रीरामकिशोरजी ]
Shastriji’s coat
It is about those days, when Lal Bahadur Shastri was the Union Minister. Shastriji was unmatched in simplicity and honesty. Once upon a time. Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru asked him to go to Kashmir for some urgent work. Shastri requested that someone else be sent in his place. When Nehruji asked the reason for this, Shastriji said – ‘It is very cold in Kashmir at this time and I do not have a warm coat.’ Hearing this, Nehruji gave one of his coats to Shastri, despite refusing a lot. Shastriji saw wearing Panditji’s coat. It was very long and hanging very low. Shastriji reached the market to buy a new coat along with one of his friends. Many coats were seen in the market, but the desired coat was not found. Either it would have been so expensive that Shastriji would have been unable to pay the price or its size would have been such that it would not have fit. A shopkeeper gave him the address of a tailor who could stitch a cheap and good coat. Shastriji along with his friend reached that audience and gave him a cheap coat to be stitched. Shastriji’s friend said – ‘You are the Union Minister. You can have hundreds of expensive coats if you want, but you are roaming around in the market for a modest coat.’ Shastri replied with a smile – ‘Brother. I don’t get enough salary to buy expensive clothes and then for me service to the country is above all, which I can do even in modest clothes.’ [Shriramkishorji]
