नाममें क्या रखा है
एक जातक कथा है। किसी दम्पतीने अपने पुत्रका नाम ‘पापक’ रख दिया था। बच्चा बड़ा हुआ तो उसे यह नाम बहुत बुरा लगा। उसने अपने आचार्यसे प्रार्थना की कि ‘भंते! मेरा नाम बदल दें। पापक नाम बड़ा अप्रिय लगता है।’
आचार्यने समझाया कि नाम तो पुकारनेके लिये होता है। मुख्य बात नामकी नहीं, कर्मकी होती है।
पापकके गले यह बात नहीं उतरी। उसका आग्रह यथावत् रहा, तब आचार्यने कहा- ‘जा, कोई अच्छा सा नाम ढूँढ़ ला, तेरा नाम बदल दिया जायगा।’
पापक खोजमें निकला। एक शवयात्राको देखकर पूछा- ‘कौन मर गया ?’
उत्तर मिला- ‘अमरपाल’ सुनकर वह चकित हो गया। नाम अमरपाल और मर गया !
आगे चलकर एक भिखारी मिला। नाम पूछा,
भिखारीने धनपति बताया। वह सोचने लगा नाम धनपति और भीख माँग रहा है !
पापक और आगे बढ़ा तो देखा एक राह भूला व्यक्ति लोगोंसे राह पूछ रहा था। नाम पूछा तो उसने कहा- ‘मेरा नाम पंथक है।’ पापक सोचमें पड़ गया। अरे, पंथक भी पथ भूलते हैं।
उसकी समझमें आ गया कि नाममें कुछ नहीं रखा है। मेरा ‘पापक’ नाम ही ठीक है। व्यक्तिके कर्म ठीक होने चाहिये। उसीका महत्त्व है, उसीमें सार है।
What is in a name
There is a Jataka story. A couple had named their son ‘Papak’. When the child grew up, he felt very bad about this name. He prayed to his Acharya that ‘Bhante! change my name The name Papak sounds very unpleasant.’
Acharya explained that the name is meant to be called. The main thing is not the name, but the work.
Papak could not accept this. His insistence remained unchanged, then Acharya said- ‘Go, find a good name, your name will be changed.’
Papak went out in search. Seeing a funeral procession, asked – ‘Who died?’
Got the answer – He was surprised to hear ‘Amarpal’. Name Amarpal and died!
Later on, a beggar was found. asked the name
The beggar told the rich. He started thinking the name is Dhanpati and begging!
Papak went further and saw that a person who had lost his way was asking people for directions. When asked his name, he said- ‘My name is Panthak.’ Papak got thinking. Arey, the followers also forget the path.
He understood that nothing has been kept in the name. My name ‘Papak’ is fine. A person’s actions should be correct. That is the importance, that is the essence.
