एक पुरानी कहानीं
घणी गई थोड़ी रही, या में पल पल जाय।
एक पलक के कारणे, युं ना कलंक लगाय।
एक राजा को राज करते काफी समय हो गया था।उसके बाल भी सफ़ेद होने लगे थे।एक दिन उसने अपने दरबार में उत्सव रखा और अपने मित्र देश के राजाओं को भी सादर आमन्त्रित किया व अपने गुरुदेव को भी बुलाया। उत्सव को रोचक बनाने के लिए राज्य की सुप्रसिद्ध नर्तकी को भी बुलाया गया।
राजा ने कुछ स्वर्ण मुद्रायें अपने गुरु जी को भी दी, ताकि नर्तकी के अच्छे गीत व नृत्य पर वे भी उसे पुरस्कृत कर सकें। सारी रात नृत्य चलता रहा। ब्रह्म मुहूर्त की बेला आई, नर्तकी ने देखा कि मेरा तबले वाला ऊँघ रहा है और तबले वाले को सावधान करना ज़रूरी है, वरना राजा का क्या भरोसा दंड दे दे। तो उसको जगाने के लिए नर्तकी ने एक *दोहा* पढ़ा –
घणी गई थोड़ी रही, या में पल पल जाय।
एक पलक के कारणे, युं ना कलंक लगाय।
अब इस *दोहे* का अलग-अलग व्यक्तियों ने अपने अनुरुप अर्थ निकाला।
तबले वाला सतर्क होकर तबला बजाने लगा।
जब यह दोहा गुरु जी ने सुना तो गुरुजी ने सारी मोहरें उस नर्तकी को अर्पण कर दी।
दोहा सुनते ही राजकुमारी ने भी अपना नौलखा हार नर्तकी को भेंट कर दिया।
दोहा सुनते ही राजा के युवराज ने भी अपना मुकुट उतारकर नर्तकी को समर्पित कर दिया ।
राजा बहुत ही अचम्भित हो गया।
सोचने लगा रात भर से नृत्य चल रहा है पर यह क्या! अचानक एक दोहे से सब अपनी मूल्यवान वस्तु बहुत ही ख़ुश हो कर नर्तकी को समर्पित कर रहें हैं ?
राजा सिंहासन से उठा और नर्तकी को बोला एक दोहे द्वारा एक सामान्य नर्तकी होकर तुमने सबको लूट लिया।
जब यह बात राजा के गुरु ने सुनी तो गुरु के नेत्रों में आँसू आ गए और गुरुजी कहने लगे राजा ! इसको नीच नर्तकी मत कह, ये अब मेरी गुरु बन गयी है क्योंकि इसके दोहे ने मेरी आँखें खोल दी हैं। दोहे से यह कह रही है कि मैं सारी उम्र जंगलों में भक्ति करता रहा और आखिरी समय में नर्तकी का मुज़रा देखकर अपनी साधना नष्ट करने यहाँ चला आया हूँ, भाई ! मैं तो चला ।” यह कहकर गुरुजी तो अपना कमण्डल उठाकर जंगल की ओर चल पड़े।
राजा की लड़की ने कहा पिता जी ! मैं जवान हो गयी हूँ। आप आँखें बन्द किए बैठे हैं, मेरा विवाह नहीं कर रहे थे। आज रात मैं आपके महावत के साथ भागकर अपना जीवन बर्बाद करने वाली थी। लेकिन इस नर्तकी के दोहे ने मुझे सुमति दी, कि जल्दबाज़ी न कर, हो सकता है तेरा विवाह कल हो जाए, क्यों अपने पिता को कलंकित करने पर तुली है ?
युवराज ने कहा – महाराज ! आप वृद्ध हो चले हैं, फिर भी मुझे राज नहीं दे रहे थे। मैं आज रात ही आपके सिपाहियों से मिलकर आपको मारने वाला था। लेकिन इस दोहे ने समझाया कि पगले ! आज नहीं तो कल आखिर राज तो तुम्हें ही मिलना है, क्यों अपने पिता के खून का कलंक अपने सिर पर लेता है! थोड़ा धैर्य रख।”

जब ये सब बातें राजा ने सुनी तो राजा को भी आत्म ज्ञान हो गया । राजा के मन में वैराग्य आ गया। राजा ने तुरन्त फैंसला लिया – “क्यों न मैं अभी युवराज का राजतिलक कर दूँ।” फिर क्या था, उसी समय राजा ने युवराज का राजतिलक किया और अपनी पुत्री को कहा – पुत्री ! दरबार में एक से एक राजकुमार आये हुए हैं। तुम अपनी इच्छा से किसी भी राजकुमार के गले में वरमाला डालकर पति रुप में चुन सकती हो।” राजकुमारी ने ऐसा ही किया और राजा सब त्याग कर जंगल में गुरु की शरण में चला गया ।
यह सब देखकर नर्तकी ने सोचा “मेरे एक दोहे से इतने लोग सुधर गए, लेकिन मैं क्यूँ नहीं सुधर पायी ? उसी समय नर्तकी में भी वैराग्य आ गया । उसने उसी समय निर्णय लिया कि आज से मैं अपना नृत्य बन्द करती हूँ। हे प्रभु ! मेरे पापों से मुझे क्षमा करना। बस, आज से मैं सिर्फ तेरा नाम सुमिरन करुँगी

One day he organized a festival in his court and respectfully invited the kings of his friendly countries and also called his Gurudev. To make the celebration interesting, famous dancers of the state were also called. The king also gave some gold coins to his teacher, so that he could reward the dancer for her good songs and dance. The dancing continued all night. The time of Brahma Muhurta came, the dancer saw that her tabla player was dozing and it was necessary to alert the tabla player, otherwise what could be the hope of the king punishing her. So to wake him up the dancer recited a couplet –

Now different people interpreted this couplet as per their own.
The tabla player became alert and started playing the tabla.
When Guruji heard this couplet, Guruji offered all the coins to the dancer.
As soon as she heard the couplet, the princess also gifted her Naulakha necklace to the dancer.
On hearing the couplet, the king’s crown prince also took off his crown and dedicated it to the dancer.
The king was very surprised. I started thinking that dancing has been going on all night but what is this? Suddenly, with one couplet, everyone became very happy and dedicated their precious things to the dancer. The king got up from the throne and said to the dancer, “With one couplet, by becoming an ordinary dancer, you have robbed everyone.”
When the king’s teacher heard this, tears welled up in his eyes and the teacher said, “King! Don’t call her a lowly dancer, she has now become my guru because her couplets have opened my eyes. It is saying through the couplet that I have been doing devotion in the forests all my life and in the last moments, after seeing the dancer’s performance, I have come here to destroy my devotion, brother! I am leaving.” Saying this, Guruji picked up his kamandalu and headed towards the forest.
The king’s daughter said, Father! I have become young. You are sitting with your eyes closed, you were not marrying me. Tonight I was going to ruin my life by running away with your mahout. But this dancer’s couplet gave me advice, don’t be hasty, maybe your marriage will happen tomorrow, why are you bent on defaming your father? The Prince said – Maharaj! You have grown old, still you were not giving me the secret. I was going to meet your soldiers and kill you tonight itself. But this couplet explained that you fool! If not today then tomorrow, after all you have to get the secret, why does he bear the stain of his father’s blood on his head? Have some patience.” , When the king heard all these things, the king also gained self-knowledge. The king became dispassionate in his mind. The king immediately decided – “Why don’t I crown the crown prince right now.” What happened next, at the same time the king crowned the crown prince and said to his daughter – Daughter! One prince after another has come to the court. You can choose any prince as your husband by putting a garland around his neck as per your wish.” The princess did the same and the king left everything and went to the forest to seek refuge with his Guru. Seeing all this, the dancer thought, “So many people improved with my one couplet, but why could I not improve? At the same time, the dancer also became dispassionate. She decided at that very moment that from today onwards I will stop my dance. O Lord! Forgive me of my sins. From today onwards, I will only chant your name.
