हनुमानजी का जन्म त्रेतायुग मे अंजना के पुत्र के रूप में चैत्र शुक्ल की पूर्णिमा की महानिशा में हुआ। अंजना के पुत्र होने के कारण ही हनुमानजी को आञ्जनेय नाम से भी जाना जाता है जिसका अर्थ होता है ‘अंजना द्वारा उत्पन्न’। उनका एक नाम पवनपुत्र भी है जिसका शास्त्रों में सबसे ज्यादा उल्लेख मिलता है। शास्त्रों में हनुमानजी को वातात्मज भी कहा गया है, वातात्मज यानी जो वायु से उत्पन्न हुआ हो।
पुराणों में कथा है कि केसरी और अंजना के विवाह के बाद वह संतान सुख से वंचित थे। अंजना अपनी इस पीड़ा को लेकर मतंग ऋषि के पास गईं, तब मंतग ऋषि ने उनसे कहा- पप्पा (कई लोग इसे पंपा सरोवर भी कहते हैं) सरोवर के पूर्व में नरसिंह आश्रम है, उसकी दक्षिण दिशा में नारायण पर्वत पर स्वामी तीर्थ है वहां जाकर उसमें स्नान करके, बारह वर्ष तक तप और उपवास करने पर तुम्हें पुत्र सुख की प्राप्ति होगी।
अंजना ने मतंग ऋषि और अपने पति केसरी से आज्ञा लेकर तप किया और बारह वर्ष तक केवल वायु पर ही जीवित रहीं। एक बार अंजना ने ‘शुचिस्नान’ करके सुंदर वस्त्राभूषण धारण किए, तब वायु देवता ने अंजना की तपस्या से प्रसन्न होकर उनके कर्णरन्ध्र में प्रवेश कर उसे वरदान दिया कि तेरे यहां सूर्य, अग्नि और सुवर्ण के समान तेजस्वी, वेद-वेदांगों का मर्मज्ञ, विश्वन्द्य महाबली पुत्र होगा।
दूसरी कथा के अनुसार-
अंजना ने मतंग ऋषि एवं अपने पति केसरी से आज्ञा लेकर नारायण पर्वत पर स्वामी तीर्थ के पास अपने आराध्य शिवजी की तपस्या शुरू की। तपस्या से प्रसन्न होकर शिवजी ने उन्हें वरदान मांगने को कहा, अंजना ने कहा कि साधु के श्राप से मुक्ति पाने के लिए उन्हें शिव के अवतार को जन्म देना है इसलिए शिव बालक के रूप में उनकी कोख से जन्म लें। ‘तथास्तु’ कहकर शिव अंतर्ध्यान हो गए।
इस घटना के बाद एक दिन अंजना शिव की आराधना कर रही थीं और दूसरी तरफ अयोध्या में, इक्ष्वाकु वंशी महाराज अज के पुत्र और अयोध्या के महाराज दशरथ, अपनी तीन रानियों के कौशल्या, सुमित्रा और कैकेयी साथ पुत्र रत्न की प्राप्ति के लिए, श्रृंगी ऋषि को बुलाकर ‘पुत्र कामेष्टि यज्ञ’ के साथ यज्ञ कर रहे थे। यज्ञ की पूर्णाहुति पर स्वयं अग्निदेव ने प्रकट होकर श्रृंगी को खीर का एक स्वर्ण पात्र (कटोरी) दिया और कहा ‘ऋषिवर! यह खीर राजा की तीनों रानियों को खिला दो।
राजा की इच्छा अवश्य पूर्ण होगी। ‘जिसे तीनों रानियों को खिलाना था लेकिन इस दौरान एक चमत्कारिक घटना हुई, एक पक्षी उस खीर की कटोरी में थोड़ा सा खीर अपने पंजों में फंसाकर ले गया और तपस्या में लीन अंजना के हाथ में गिरा दिया। अंजना ने शिव का प्रसाद समझकर उसे ग्रहण कर लिया और इस प्रकार हनुमानजी का जन्म हुआ। शिव भगवान का अवतार कहे जाने वाले हनुमानजी को मारूति के नाम से भी जाना जाता है।

Hanumanji was born in Tretayuga as the son of Anjana on the full moon day of Chaitra Shukla. Being the son of Anjana, Hanumanji is also known by the name Anjaneya which means ‘born of Anjana’. He also has a name Pawanputra which is mentioned the most in the scriptures. In the scriptures, Hanumanji has also been called Vaatmaj, Vaatmaj means the one who was born from the air.
There is a story in Puranas that after the marriage of Kesari and Anjana, he was deprived of child happiness. Anjana went to Matang Rishi about her pain, then Matang Rishi told her- Pappa (many people also call it Pampa Sarovar) to the east of the lake there is Narasimha Ashram, to its south there is Swami Tirtha on Narayan Parvat. By bathing in it, by doing penance and fasting for twelve years, you will get the happiness of a son.
Anjana did penance after taking permission from sage Matang and her husband Kesari and lived only on air for twelve years. Once Anjana wore beautiful clothes after taking a ‘clean bath’, then the Vayu deity, being pleased with Anjana’s penance, entered her ear and gave her a boon that in your place, as bright as the sun, fire and gold, the connoisseur of the Vedas, Vishvandya. Mahabali will be the son.
According to the second legend- Anjana, after taking orders from Matang Rishi and her husband Kesari, started the penance of her adorable Shivaji near Swami Tirtha on Narayan Parvat. Pleased with the penance, Shivji asked her to ask for a boon, Anjana said that to get rid of the curse of the monk, she has to give birth to an incarnation of Shiva, so Shiva should be born from her womb as a child. Saying ‘Amen’, Shiva disappeared.
After this incident one day Anjana was worshiping Shiva and on the other hand in Ayodhya, the son of Ikshvaku dynasty Maharaja Aja and Dasharatha, the Maharaja of Ayodhya, along with his three queens Kaushalya, Sumitra and Kaikeyi to get son Ratna, Shringi Rishi He was performing Yagya with ‘Putra Kameshti Yagya’. On the completion of the sacrifice, Agnidev himself appeared and gave Shringi a golden vessel (bowl) of kheer and said ‘Rishivar! Feed this pudding to the King’s three Queens.
The wish of the king will definitely be fulfilled. ‘Which was to be fed to the three queens but during this a miraculous incident happened, a bird trapped a little kheer in the bowl of that kheer and dropped it in the hand of Anjana who was engaged in penance. Anjana accepted it considering it as Shiva’s prasad and thus Hanumanji was born. Hanumanji, who is called the incarnation of Lord Shiva, is also known as Maruti.
