कृष्णावतार में भगवान श्रीकृष्ण की ऐश्वर्य-लीलाओं के अनेक प्रसंग आते हैं, जिनमें भक्तों को उनकी ‘भगवत्ता’ का ज्ञान हुआ । भगवान श्रीकृष्ण ने अपनी अलौकिक लीला में विश्वरूप के दर्शन चार बार कराए हैं—
१. व्रज में मिट्टी खाने की लीला के दौरान माता यशोदा को ।
२. कौरवों की राजसभा में ।
३. महाभारत के युद्ध के दौरान गीता का उपदेश करते हुए अर्जुन को ।
४. द्वारका के रास्ते में उत्तंक मुनि को ।
भगवान श्रीकृष्ण की उत्तंक मुनि पर कृपा : महाभारत की कथा!!!!!!!
महाभारत युद्ध के बाद पांडवों ने श्रीकृष्ण की सहायता से अश्वमेध-यज्ञ किया । यज्ञ की समाप्ति पर पांडवों से विदा लेकर श्रीकृष्ण द्वारका लौट रहे थे । रास्ते में मरुभूमि में उन्हें महातेजस्वी उत्तंक मुनि मिले । श्रीकृष्ण ने मुनि की वंदना की, बदले में मुनि ने श्रीकृष्ण की कुशल पूछते हुए कहा—‘श्रीकृष्ण ! आप कौरवों को समझाने गए थे, क्या वह कार्य सफल हो गया ? क्या कौरव-पांडव अब सुखपूर्वक हैं ?’
इस प्रश्न का उत्तर देते हुए श्रीकृष्ण ने कहा—‘मैंने उन्हें समझाने की बहुत चेष्टा की, भीष्म और विदुर ने भी दुर्योधन को बहुत समझाया; परंतु वह नहीं माना । इस कारण महान युद्ध छिड़ गया और दोनों पक्षों के प्राय: सभी लोग मारे गए । केवल पांच पांडव ही शेष रहे हैं । धृतराष्ट्र के पुत्रों में से युयुत्सु के सिवा कोई नहीं बचा है । प्रारब्ध के विधान को कोई बुद्धि और बल से नहीं मिटा सकता; आपको तो ये सब बातें मालूम ही होंगी ।’
श्रीकृष्ण की इस बात को सुन कर उत्तंक मुनि क्रोधित हो गए और बोले—‘मधुसूदन ! तुम चाहते तो कुरु-कुल को नष्ट होने से बचा सकते थे; लेकिन तुमने उपेक्षा की, इसी कारण सब मारे गए । मुझे क्रोध आ रहा है । अब मैं तुम्हें शाप दूंगा ।’
मुनि की बात सुन कर भगवान श्रीकृष्ण ने कहा—‘मुनिवर ! आप शांति से मेरे अध्यात्म-तत्त्व की बात सुनिए, यों उखड़िये मत । मैं जानता हूँ, आप तपस्वी हैं; परंतु कोई भी पुरुष थोड़ी-सी तपस्या के बल पर मेरा तिरस्कार नहीं कर सकता । आप मुझे शाप देंगे तो आपका तप नष्ट हो जायेगा । आपने सेवा से गुरु को प्रसन्न करके और बाल्यकाल से ब्रह्मचर्य का पालन करके जो पुण्य प्राप्त किया है, मैं उसे नष्ट नहीं करना चाहता हूँ ।’
तब उत्तंक मुनि ने कहा—‘श्रीकृष्ण ! आप मुझे अपने अध्यात्म-तत्त्व का ज्ञान दो । उसे सुन कर या तो मैं आपको वरदान दूंगा या शाप दे दूंगा ।’
भगवान श्रीकृष्ण ने अपने परमात्म-स्वरूप का रहस्य मुनि को समझाते हुए कहा—
‘जिसको लोग सत्-असत्, व्यक्त-अव्यक्त और अक्षर-क्षर कहते हैं, वह सब मेरा ही रूप है । इनसे परे जो विश्व है, वह सब मुझ सनातन देवदेव के सिवा और कुछ भी नहीं है । ॐकार से आरम्भ होने वाले चारों वेद मुझे ही समझिये । मैं धर्म की स्थापना और रक्षा के लिए अनेकों योनियों में अवतार धारण करता हूँ और भिन्न-भिन्न रूप बना कर तीनों लोकों में विचरता रहता हूँ । मैं ही विष्णु, ब्रह्मा, इन्द्र तथा सबकी उत्पत्ति और प्रलय का कारण हूँ । इस समय मैंने मनुष्य अवतार धारण किया है; इसलिए कौरवों पर अपनी शक्ति का प्रयोग न करके पहले दीनतापूर्वक ही उनसे प्रार्थना की; किन्तु मोहग्रस्त होने के कारण उन्होंने मेरी बात नहीं मानी । इसके बाद क्रोध में भर कर मैंने बड़े-बड़े भय दिखाए परंतु वे अधर्म से युक्त एवं कालग्रस्त होने के कारण मेरी बात मानने को राजी न हुए । अत: युद्ध में प्राण देकर इस समय स्वर्ग में पहुंचे हुए हैं ।’
भगवान श्रीकृष्ण की दिव्य वाणी को सुन कर मुनि को बोध हुआ और उन्होंने श्रीकृष्ण को शाप देने का विचार त्याग दिया । उन्होंने भगवान की स्तुति करते हुए कहा—
यदि त्वनुग्रहं किंचित्त्वत्तोऽर्हामि जनार्दन ।
द्रष्टुमिच्छामि ते रूपमैश्वरं तन्निदप्शय ।। (महा. अ. ५५।३)
अर्थात—हे जनार्दन ! यदि आप मुझे किंचित् भी अपना अनुग्रह पाने योग्य समझते हैं, तो मुझे अपना ईश्वरीय रूप दिखा दीजिए । मैं आपके उस परम रूप को देखना चाहता हूँ ।’
भगवान श्रीकृष्ण द्वारा उत्तंक मुनि को अपने विश्वरूप का दर्शन कराना!!!!
भगवान श्रीकृष्ण प्रसन्न हो गए और उन्होंने उत्तंक मुनि को अपना विराट स्वरूप दिखाया । श्रीकृष्ण के इस रूप में सारा विश्व उनके अंदर दिखाई पड़ रहा था और संपूर्ण आकाश को घेर कर खड़ा हुआ था । हजारों सूर्यों और अग्नि के समान उनका प्रकाश था, बड़ी-बड़ी भुजाएं थीं, सब दिशाओं में उनके अनंत मुख थे ।
ऐसे अद्भुत रूप को देख कर मुनि आश्चर्य में पड़ गए । भगवान की स्तुति करते हुए मुनि ने कहा—
‘भगवन् ! आप ही से संपूर्ण जगत की उत्पत्ति होती है । पृथ्वी आपके दोनों चरणों से और आकाश आपके मस्तक से व्याप्त है । पृथ्वी और आकाश के बीच का भाग आपके उदर से घिरा हुआ है । संपूर्ण दिशाएं आपकी भुजाओं में समायी हुई हैं । अब आप अपने इस महान अद्भुत रूप को समेट कर मुझे अपना वही श्यामसुन्दर मनोहर शाश्वत रूप फिर दिखाइए।’
भगवान श्रीकृष्ण ने मुनि को अपने श्यामसुन्दर रूप के दर्शन दिए ।
करी गोपाल की सब होय ।
जो अपनों पुरुसारथ मानत अति झूठों है सोय।
साधन मंत्र यंत्र उद्यम बल, यह सब डारहु धोय।
जो लिख राखि नंदनन्दन नें मेट सकैं नहिं कोय।
दु:ख सुख लाभ अलाभ समुझि तुम कतहिं मरत हौं रोय ।
‘सूरदास’ स्वामी करुणामय श्याम चरन मन मोय ।।
There are many incidents of Lord Krishna’s divine pastimes in Krishna Avatar, in which the devotees got the knowledge of his ‘Godliness’. Lord Shri Krishna has shown the form of Vishwaroop four times in his supernatural pastimes-
1. Mother Yashoda during the leela of eating soil in Vraj.
2. In the court of the Kauravas.
3. Arjuna preaching the Gita during the battle of Mahabharata.
4. To Utank Muni on the way to Dwarka.

After the Mahabharata war, the Pandavas performed the Ashwamedha Yajna with the help of Shri Krishna. At the end of the Yajna, Shri Krishna was returning to Dwarka after bidding farewell to the Pandavas. On the way, he met Mahatejaswi Uttanka Muni in the desert. Shri Krishna worshiped the sage, in return the sage inquired about the well-being of Shri Krishna and said – ‘Shri Krishna! You had gone to explain to the Kauravas, was that task successful? Are the Kauravas and the Pandavas living happily now?’
Answering this question, Shri Krishna said-‘ I tried a lot to convince him, Bhishma and Vidur also explained a lot to Duryodhana; But he did not agree. Due to this a great war broke out and almost all the people on both the sides were killed. Only five Pandavas are left. None of the sons of Dhritarashtra survived except Yuyutsu. No one can erase the law of destiny with intelligence and force; You must know all these things.
Utank Muni got angry after hearing this thing of Shri Krishna and said-‘ Madhusudan! If you wanted, you could have saved the Kuru-Kul from being destroyed; But you neglected, that’s why all were killed. I am getting angry Now I will curse you.’
After listening to the sage, Lord Krishna said – ‘Munivar! You listen to my spirituality calmly, don’t get uprooted like this. I know, you are ascetic; But no man can despise me on the strength of a little penance. If you curse me, your penance will be destroyed. I don’t want to destroy the virtue you have earned by pleasing your Guru with service and practicing celibacy since childhood.’
Then Uttanka Muni said – ‘Shri Krishna! You give me the knowledge of your spirituality. After listening to him, I will either give you a boon or curse you.
Lord Krishna while explaining the secret of his divine nature to the sage said-
What people call true-false, manifest-unmanifest and letter-word, all that is my form. The world beyond these is nothing but Me, the eternal God. All the four Vedas starting with Omkar should be understood by Me only. For the establishment and protection of Dharma, I incarnate in many forms and keep roaming in the three worlds in different forms. I am the cause of the origin and destruction of Vishnu, Brahma, Indra and all. At this time I have assumed human form; That’s why without using his power on the Kauravas, first humbly prayed to them; But because of his fascination, he did not listen to me. After this, being filled with anger, I showed great threats, but they did not agree to obey me because they were full of unrighteousness and were affected by time. That’s why he has reached heaven by giving his life in the war.’
Hearing the divine speech of Lord Krishna, the sage realized and gave up the idea of cursing Krishna. Praising the Lord, he said-
If I deserve any mercy from You, O Janārdana, please do so. I wish to see your divine form Please tell me (Maha. A. 55.3)
That is – O Janardan! If you consider me even a little bit worthy of your grace, then show me your divine form. I want to see that ultimate form of yours.’

Lord Krishna was pleased and showed his great form to Uttanka Muni. In this form of Shri Krishna, the whole world was visible inside him and surrounded the entire sky. He had light like thousands of suns and fire, He had huge arms, He had infinite faces in all directions.
The sages were astonished to see such a wonderful form. Praising the Lord, the sage said-
‘ God! The whole world originates from you only. The earth pervades both your feet and the sky pervades your head. The part between the earth and the sky is surrounded by your abdomen. All directions are included in your arms. Now you show me your same Shyamsundar beautiful eternal form by collecting this great wonderful form of yours.’
Lord Krishna gave darshan of his Shyamsundar form to Muni.
