महर्षि कपिल प्रतिदिन पैदल अपने आश्रम से गंगा स्नान के लिए जाया करते थे। मार्ग में एक छोटा सा गाँव पड़ता था। जहाँ पर कई किसान परिवार रहा करते थे। जिस मार्ग से महर्षि गंगा स्नान के लिए जाया करते थे, उसी मार्ग में एक विधवा ब्राह्मणी की कुटिया भी पड़ती थी। महर्षि जब भी उस मार्ग से गुजरते, ब्राह्मणी या तो उन्हें चरखा कातते मिलती या फिर धान कूटते।
एक दिन विचलित होकर महर्षि ने ब्राह्मणी से इसका कारण पूछ ही लिया। पूछने पर पता चला की ब्राह्मणी के घर में उसके पति के अलावा आजीविका चलने वाला कोई न था। अब पति की मृत्यु के बाद पूरे परिवार के भरण-पोषण की जिम्मेदारी उसी पर आ गई थी।
कपिल मुनि को ब्राह्मणी की इस अवस्था पर दया आ गई और उन्होंने ब्राह्मणी के पास जाकर कहा–भद्रे ! मैं पास ही के आश्रम का कुलपति कपिल हूँ। मेरे कई शिष्य राज-परिवारों से हैं। अगर तुम चाहो तो में तुम्हारी आजीविका की स्थाई व्यवस्था करवा सकता हूँ, मुझसे तुम्हारी यह असहाय अवस्था देखी नहीं जाती।
ब्राह्मणी ने हाथ जोड़कर महर्षि का आभार व्यक्त किया और कहा–मुनिवर, आपकी इस दयालुता के लिए मैं आपकी आभारी हूँ, लेकिन आपने मुझे पहचानने में थोड़ी भूल की है। ना तो में असहाय हूँ और ना ही निर्धन। आपने शायद देखा नहीं, मेरे पास पांच ऐसे रत्न हैं जिनसे अगर मैं चाहूँ तो खुद राजा जैसा जीवन यापन कर सकती हूँ। लेकिन मैंने अभी तक उसकी आवश्यकता अनुभव नहीं किया इसलिए वह पांच रत्न मेरे पास सुरक्षिक रखे हैं।
कपिल मुनि विधवा ब्राह्मणी की बात सुनकर आश्चर्यचकित हुए और उन्होंने कहा, भद्रे ! अगर आप अनुचित न समझे तो आपके वे पांच बहुमूल्य रत्न मुझे भी दिखाएँ। देखूँ तो आपके पास कैसे बहुमूल्य रत्न हैं ?
ब्राह्मणी ने आसन बिछा दिया और कहा–‘मुनिवर आप थोड़ी देर बैठें, मैं अभी आपको मेरे रत्न दिखाती हूँ।’ इतना कहकर ब्राह्मणी फिर से चरखा कातने लगी।
थोड़ी देर में ब्राह्मणी के पांच पुत्र विद्यालय से लौटकर आए। उन्होंने आकर महर्षि और माँ के पैर छुए और कहा–माँ ! हमने आज भी किसी से झूठ नहीं बोला, किसी को कटु वचन नहीं कहा, गुरुदेव ने जो सिखाया और बताया उसे परिश्रम पूर्वक पूरा किया है।
महर्षि कपिल को और कुछ कहने की आवश्यकता नहीं पड़ी। उन्होंने ब्राह्मणी को प्रणाम कर कहा भद्रे ! वाकई में तुम्हारे पास अति बहुमूल्य रत्न है, ऐसे अनुशासित बच्चे जिस घर में हों, जिस देश में, हो उसे चिंता करने की आवश्यकता ही नहीं है।

Maharishi Kapil used to go on foot from his ashram for bathing in the Ganges every day. There was a small village on the route. Where many farmers used to live. The route through which Maharishi Ganga used to go for bathing, a widow Brahmin’s hut also used to be in the same route. Whenever Maharishi passed through that route, the Brahmins would either get a spinning wheel or grind the paddy. One day, Maharishi got distracted and asked the Brahmin to ask the reason for this. On being asked, it was found that there was no one to live in Brahmini’s house other than her husband. Now after the death of the husband, the responsibility of maintaining the entire family came to the same. Kapil Muni took pity on this state of Brahmani and he went to the Brahmin and said-Bhadre! I am the Vice Chancellor Kapil of the nearby ashram. Many of my disciples are from the royal family. If you want, I can make a permanent arrangement of your livelihood, I am not seen this helpless state. The Brahmani thanked Maharishi with folded hands and said-Manivar, I am grateful to you for this kind of kindness, but you have made some mistake in recognizing me. I am neither helpless nor poor. You probably have not seen, I have five such gems that I can live like a king myself if I want. But I have not yet experienced his need, so that five gems have kept me safe with me.
Kapil Muni was surprised to hear the widow Brahmani and he said, Bhadre! If you do not consider inappropriate, then show me those five precious gems. If I see, how do you have precious gems? The Brahmin laid the seat and said-“Munivar, you sit for a while, I can show you my gems now.” Saying this, the Brahmin started spitting the spinning wheel again. In a short time, five sons of Brahmani returned from school. He came and touched Maharishi and mother’s feet and said-Mother! Even today we did not lie to anyone, did not say a bitter word to anyone, Gurudev has fulfilled what he taught and told. Maharishi Kapil did not need to say anything else. He bowed to the Brahmin and said Bhadre! Really you have a very precious gem, such disciplined children in which the country, in which the country, does not need to worry.
