एक बार की बात है। एक संत अपने एक शिष्य के साथ किसी नगर की ओर जा रहे थे। रास्ते में चलते-चलते रात हो चली थी और तेज बारिश भी हो रही थी। संत और उनका शिष्य कच्ची सड़क पर चुपचाप चले जा रहे थे। उनके कपड़े भी कीचड़ से लथपथ हो चुके थे। मार्ग में चलते-चलते संत ने अचानक अपने शिष्य से सवाल किया–‘वत्स, क्या तुम बता सकते हो कि वास्तव में सच्चा साधु कौन होता है ?’ संत की बात सुनकर शिष्य सोच में पड़ गया। उसे तुरंत कोई जवाब नहीं सूझा। उसे मौन देखकर संत ने कहा–‘सच्चा साधु वह नहीं होता, जो अपनी सिद्धियों के प्रभाव से किसी रोगी को ठीक कर दे या पशु-पक्षियों की भाषा समझ ले। सच्चा साधु वह भी नहीं होता, जो अपने घर-परिवार से नाता तोड़ पूरी तरह बैरागी बन गया हो या जिसने मानवता के लिए अपना जीवन समर्पित कर दिया हो।’ शिष्य को यह सब सुनकर बहुत आश्चर्य हो रहा था। वह तो इन्हीं गुणों को साधुता के लक्षण मानता था। उसने संत से पूछा–‘गुरुदेव, तो फिर सच्चा साधु किसे कहा जा सकता है ?’ इस पर संत ने कहा–‘वत्स, कल्पना करो कि इस अंधेरी, तूफानी रात में हम जब नगर में पहुँचे और द्वार खटखटाएँ। इस पर चौकीदार हमसे पूछे–‘कौन है ?’ और हम कहें–‘दो साधु।’ इस पर वह कहे–‘मुफ्तखोरों! चलो भागो यहाँ से। न जाने कहाँ-कहाँ से चले आते हैं।’ संत के मुख से ऐसी बातें सुनकर शिष्य की हैरानी बढ़ती जा रही थी। संत ने आगे कहा–‘सोचो, इसी तरह का व्यवहार और जगहों पर भी हो। हमें हर कोई उसी तरह दुत्कारे, अपमानित करे, प्रताड़ित करे। इस पर भी यदि हम नाराज न हों, उनके प्रति जरा-सी भी कटुता हमारे मन में आए और हम उनमें भी प्रभु के ही दर्शन करते रहें, तो समझो कि यही सच्ची साधुता है। साधु होने का मापदंड है–हर परिस्थिति में समानता और सहजता का व्यवहार।’ इस पर शिष्य ने सवाल किया–‘लेकिन इस तरह का भाव तो एक गृहस्थ में भी हो सकता है। तो क्या वह भी साधु है ?’ संत ने मुस्कराते हुए कहाबिलकुल है जैसा कि मैंने पहले ही कहा कि सिर्फ घर छोड़कर बैरागी हो जाने से ही कोई साधु नहीं हो जाता। साधु वही है, जो साधुता के गुणों को धारण करे। और ऐसा कोई भी कर सकता है
Once upon a time. A saint was going towards a city with one of his disciples. On the way, it was night and it was raining heavy rains. The saint and his disciples were going quietly on the raw road. His clothes were also soaked with mud. While walking on the way, the saint suddenly questioned his disciple-‘Wattas, can you tell who is really a true monk?’ The disciple got into thinking after listening to the saint. He did not think of any answer immediately. Seeing him silently, the saint said-“The teacher is not the one who cures a patient with the influence of his siddhis or understands the language of animals and birds.” A true monk is not even a person who has become a completely barrane by breaking his family or who has dedicated his life to humanity. ”The disciple was very surprised to hear all this. He considered these qualities to be a symptom of saintliness. He asked the saint-“Gurudev, then who can be called a true monk?” On this, the saint said-“Imagine, imagine that in this dark, stormy night when we reach the city and knock the door.” On this the watchman asks us-‘Who are you?’ And we say-‘Two sadhus.’ On this, he says-‘Moutkhor! Let’s run from here. Don’t know where and where they come from. ”The disciple’s surprise was increasing after hearing such things from the mouth of the saint. The saint further said-“Sochao, similar behavior and also in places. Everyone should abuse, humiliate, torture us in the same way. Even on this, if we are not angry, even a little bitterness towards them comes in our mind and we keep seeing God in them, then understand that this is true saintliness. The criterion of being a monk is-the behavior of equality and ease in every situation. ”The disciple questioned-“ But this kind of feeling can also happen in a householder. So is he a monk too? ”The saint said with a smile, as I already said that only after leaving the house, there is no monk. The monk is the one who holds the qualities of saintliness. And anyone can do it
