एक बार की बात है, एक गाँव में रामलाल नाम का एक बढ़ई (Carpenter) रहता था। वह बहुत मेहनती और ईमानदार व्यक्ति था। अपनी सच्चाई और निष्ठा के कारण गाँव में उसकी बहुत इज़्ज़त थी। एक दिन उसे काम के सिलसिले में किसी दूर के शहर जाना पड़ा, जहाँ एक सेठ के यहाँ वह लकड़ी का काम करने लगा।
सब कुछ ठीक चल रहा था, लेकिन एक दिन काम करते-करते उसकी आरी टूट गई। बिना आरी के उसका काम रुक गया। न तो वह नया औज़ार खरीदने की स्थिति में था और न ही खाली हाथ गाँव लौटना चाहता था। उसने सोचा कि पास के किसी गाँव में जाकर किसी लोहार से आरी बनवा लेता हूँ।
काफी पूछताछ के बाद उसे एक लोहार की दुकान मिली। वह लोहार बहुत ही कुशल और सिद्धांतप्रिय व्यक्ति था।
बढ़ई ने कहा, “भाई, मेरी आरी टूट गई है, कृपया मेरे लिए एक अच्छी सी आरी बना दो।”
लोहार मुस्कराया और बोला, “बिलकुल बना दूँगा, पर इसमें थोड़ा समय लगेगा। तुम कल इसी वक़्त आकर आरी ले लेना।”
बढ़ई बोला, “भाई, अगर तुम इसे आज ही बना दो तो मैं तुम्हें ज्यादा पैसे दे दूँगा। मुझे काम जल्दी पूरा करना है।”
लोहार ने शांत स्वर में कहा, “बात पैसों की नहीं है भाई, औज़ार बनाना मेरे लिए सिर्फ़ रोज़ी नहीं बल्कि एक कला और जिम्मेदारी है। अगर मैं जल्दबाज़ी में काम करूँगा तो वह औज़ार मजबूत नहीं बनेगा। मैं हर औज़ार में अपनी आत्मा लगाता हूँ।”
बढ़ई ने लोहार की बात मानी और अगले दिन आने का वादा किया।
अगले दिन जब वह पहुँचा तो लोहार ने उसे एक बहुत सुंदर और मजबूत आरी दी। आरी देखकर बढ़ई की आँखें चमक उठीं। उसने काम शुरू किया तो पाया कि यह आरी पहले से कहीं ज़्यादा तेज़ और टिकाऊ है।
उसने खुशी-खुशी काम पूरा किया और अपने सेठ को बताया, “सेठ जी, मैंने जो नई आरी बनवाई है, वह बहुत अच्छी है। एक लोहार ने बड़ी मेहनत से बनाई है।”
सेठ ने भी आरी को देखा और उसकी गुणवत्ता से बहुत प्रभावित हुआ। उसने पूछा, “इस आरी के कितने पैसे दिए तुमने?”
बढ़ई बोला, “बस दस रुपये।”
सेठ ने मन में सोचा, “इतनी अच्छी आरी के तो तीस रुपये तक आसानी से मिल सकते हैं। क्यों न इस लोहार से दर्जनों आरी बनवाकर शहर में बेच दूँ? इससे तो मुझे खूब मुनाफा होगा!”
अगले दिन सेठ लोहार के पास पहुँचा और बोला, “भाई, मैं तुमसे बहुत सारी आरी बनवाना चाहता हूँ। हर आरी के दस रुपये दूँगा। लेकिन एक शर्त है — अब तुम सिर्फ मेरे लिए काम करोगे, किसी और को आरी नहीं बेचोगे।”
लोहार ने बिना देर किए कहा, “माफ कीजिए, मैं यह शर्त नहीं मान सकता।”
सेठ ने सोचा कि शायद लोहार को और पैसे चाहिए। उसने कहा, “ठीक है, मैं तुम्हें हर आरी के पंद्रह रुपये दूँगा। अब तो मेरी बात मान लो।”
लोहार ने फिर विनम्रता से कहा, “सेठ जी, मैं अपनी मेहनत का मूल्य खुद तय करता हूँ। मैं लालच में आकर अपने सिद्धांतों से समझौता नहीं कर सकता। मुझे इतना ही पर्याप्त है कि मैं ईमानदारी से काम करूँ और किसी को ठगूँ नहीं।”
सेठ को यह सुनकर बहुत अचरज हुआ। उसने कहा, “अरे भाई, कोई आती हुई लक्ष्मी को कौन ठुकराता है?”
लोहार मुस्कराया और बोला, “सेठ जी, यह सही है कि आप मुझसे आरी खरीदकर दुगने दाम में बेच सकते हैं, लेकिन ऐसा करके आप गरीब खरीदारों का शोषण करेंगे। मैं किसी की तकलीफ़ का कारण नहीं बनना चाहता। मेरा काम लोगों की मदद करना है, उनका नुकसान करना नहीं।”
सेठ कुछ देर तक मौन रहा। फिर बोला, “तुम सचमुच एक महान व्यक्ति हो। मैंने आज तक बहुत से कामगार देखे हैं, पर तुम्हारे जैसा ईमानदार कोई नहीं देखा।”
लोहार ने बस इतना कहा, “धन और लालच मनुष्य को कभी संतुष्टि नहीं दे सकते। सच्ची तृप्ति सत्य और निष्ठा में है।”
सेठ को अपनी गलती समझ आ गई। उसने मन ही मन निश्चय किया कि अब वह अपने व्यापार में कभी किसी का शोषण नहीं करेगा।
सीख (Moral of the Story):
लालच इंसान को अंधा बना देता है, जबकि ईमानदारी और संतोष हमें सच्चा सुख देते हैं। जैसे उस लोहार ने दिखाया — सच्चे कर्म और निष्ठा से किया गया काम ही जीवन का सबसे बड़ा धन है।
Once upon a time, there lived a carpenter named Ramlal in a village. He was a very hardworking and honest person. He was highly respected in the village because of his truthfulness and loyalty. One day he had to go to a distant city for work, where he started doing wood work at a merchant’s house.
Everything was going well, but one day while working his saw broke. Without the saw his work came to a halt. Neither was he in a position to buy a new tool nor did he want to return to the village empty handed. He thought of going to a nearby village and getting a saw made from a blacksmith.
After much inquiry he found a blacksmith shop. That blacksmith was a very skilled and principled person.
The carpenter said, “Brother, my saw is broken, please make a good saw for me.”
The blacksmith smiled and said, “I will definitely make it, but it will take some time. You come tomorrow at the same time and get the saw.”
The carpenter said, “Brother, if you make it today itself, I will pay you more money. I want to complete the work quickly.”
The blacksmith said in a calm voice, “Brother, it is not about money, making tools is not just a livelihood for me but an art and a responsibility. If I work in a hurry, the tool will not become strong. I put my soul into every tool.”
The carpenter listened to the blacksmith and promised to come the next day.
When he arrived the next day, the blacksmith gave him a very beautiful and strong saw. The carpenter’s eyes lit up after seeing the saw. When he started work, he found that this saw was sharper and more durable than before.
He happily completed the work and told his master, “Seth ji, the new saw I have made is very good. A blacksmith has made it with great effort.”
Seth also saw the saw and was very impressed by its quality. He asked, “How much did you pay for this saw?”
The carpenter said, “Just ten rupees.”
Seth thought in his mind, “You can easily get thirty rupees for such a good saw. Why not make dozens of saws from this blacksmith and sell them in the city? I will get a lot of profit from this!”
The next day Seth reached the blacksmith and said, “Brother, I want to make a lot of saws from you. I will give you ten rupees for each saw. But there is one condition – now you will work only for me and will not sell the saws to anyone else.”
The blacksmith said without any delay, “Sorry, I cannot accept this condition.”
Seth thought that perhaps the blacksmith needed more money. He said, “Okay, I will give you fifteen rupees for each saw. Now listen to me.”
The blacksmith then said politely, “Seth ji, I decide the value of my hard work myself. I cannot compromise my principles out of greed. It is enough for me that I work honestly and do not cheat anyone.”
Seth was very surprised to hear this. He said, “Hey brother, who rejects Lakshmi who comes?”
The blacksmith smiled and said, “Seth ji, it is true that you can buy the saw from me and sell it at double the price, but by doing so you will be exploiting the poor buyers. I do not want to cause anyone’s trouble. My job is to help people, not to harm them.”
Seth remained silent for some time. Then he said, “You are really a great person. I have seen many workers till date, but I have never seen anyone as honest as you.”
The blacksmith simply said, “Wealth and greed can never give man satisfaction. True satisfaction lies in truth and loyalty.”
Seth understood his mistake. He decided in his mind that now he would never exploit anyone in his business.
Moral of the Story: Greed makes man blind, whereas honesty and contentment give us true happiness. As that blacksmith showed – work done with true deeds and dedication is the greatest wealth in life.
