नचिकेता-यमराज के बीच हुआ संवाद

नचिकेता और यमराज के बीच हुए संवाद का उल्लेख हमें कठोपनिषद में मिलता है। नचिकेता के पिता जब विश्वजीत यज्ञ के बाद बूढ़ी एवं बीमार गायों को ब्राह्मणों को दान में देने लगे तो नचिकेता ने अपने पिता से पूछा कि आप मुझे दान में किसे देंगे? तब नचिकेता के पिता क्रोध से भरकर बोले कि मैं तुम्हें यमराज को दान में दूंगा। चूंकि ये शब्द यज्ञ के समय कहे गए थे, अतः नचिकेता को यमराज के पास जाना ही पड़ा। यमराज अपने महल से बाहर थे, इस कारण नचिकेता ने तीन दिन एवं तीन रातों तक यमराज के महल के बाहर प्रतीक्षा की।

तीन दिन बाद जब यमराज आए तो उन्होंने इस धीरज भरी प्रतीक्षा से प्रसन्न होकर नचिकेता से तीन वरदान मांगने को कहा। नचिकेता ने पहले वरदान में कहा कि जब वह घर वापस पहुंचे तो उसके पिता उसे स्वीकार करें एवं उसके पिता का क्रोध शांत हो। दूसरे वरदान में नचिकेता ने जानना चाहा कि क्या देवी-देवता स्वर्ग में अजर एवं अमर रहते हैं और निर्भय होकर विचरण करते हैं! तब यमराज ने नचिकेता को अग्नि ज्ञान दिया, जिसे नचिकेताग्नि भी कहते हैं।

तीसरे वरदान में नचिकेता ने पूछा कि ‘हे यमराज, सुना है कि आत्मा अजर-अमर है। मृत्यु एवं जीवन का चक्र चलता रहता है। लेकिन आत्मा न कभी जन्म लेती है और न ही कभी मरती है।’ नचिकेता ने पूछा कि इस मृत्यु एवं जन्म का रहस्य क्या है? क्या इस चक्र से बाहर आने का कोई उपाय है? तब यमराज ने कहा कि यह प्रश्न मत पूछो, मैं तुम्हें अपार धन, संपदा, राज्य इत्यादि इस प्रश्न के बदले दे दूंगा। लेकिन नचिकेता अडिग रहे और तब यमराज ने नचिकेता को आत्मज्ञान दिया। नचिकेता द्वारा प्राप्त किया गया आत्मज्ञान आज भी प्रासंगिक और विश्‍व प्रसिद्ध है। सत्य हमेशा प्रासंगिक ही होता है।

यमराज-नचिकेता संवाद का वर्णन संक्षिप्त में…

नचिकेता प्रश्न : – किस तरह शरीर से होता है ब्रह्म का ज्ञान व दर्शन?

यमराज उत्तर : – मनुष्य शरीर दो आंखं, दो कान, दो नाक के छिद्र, एक मुंह, ब्रह्मरन्ध्र, नाभि, गुदा और शिश्न के रूप में 11 दरवाजों वाले नगर की तरह है, जो ब्रह्म की नगरी ही है। वे मनुष्य के हृदय में रहते हैं। इस रहस्य को समझकर जो मनुष्य ध्यान और चिंतन करता है, उसे किसी प्रकार का दुख नहीं होता है। ऐसा ध्यान और चिंतन करने वाले लोग मृत्यु के बाद जन्म-मृत्यु के बंधन से भी मुक्त हो जाता है।

नचिकेता प्रश्न : – क्या आत्मा मरती या मारती है?

यमराज उत्तर : – जो लोग आत्मा को मारने वाला या मरने वाला मानते हैं, वे असल में आत्मा को नहीं जानते और भटके हुए हैं। उनकी बातों को नजरअंदाज करना चाहिए, क्योंकि आत्मा न मरती है, न किसी को मार सकती है।

नचिकेता प्रश्न : – कैसे हृदय में माना जाता है परमात्मा का वास?

यमराज उत्तर : – मनुष्य का हृदय ब्रह्म को पाने का स्थान माना जाता है। यमदेव ने बताया मनुष्य ही परमात्मा को पाने का अधिकारी माना गया है। उसका हृदय अंगूठे की माप का होता है। इसलिए इसके अनुसार ही ब्रह्म को अंगूठे के आकार का पुकारा गया है और अपने हृदय में भगवान का वास मानने वाला व्यक्ति यह मानता है कि दूसरों के हृदय में भी ब्रह्म इसी तरह विराजमान है। इसलिए दूसरों की बुराई या घृणा से दूर रहना चाहिए।

नचिकेता प्रश्न : – क्या है आत्मा का स्वरूप?

यमराज उत्तर : यमदेव के अनुसार शरीर के नाश होने के साथ जीवात्मा का नाश नहीं होता। आत्मा का भोग-विलास, नाशवान, अनित्य और जड़ शरीर से इसका कोई लेना-देना नहीं है। यह अनन्त, अनादि और दोष रहित है। इसका कोई कारण है, न कोई कार्य यानी इसका न जन्म होता है, न मरती है।

नचिकेता प्रश्न : – यदि कोई व्यक्ति आत्मा-परमात्मा के ज्ञान को नहीं जानता है तो उसे कैसे फल भोगना पड़ते हैं?

यमराज उत्तर : – जिस तरह बारिश का पानी एक ही होता है, लेकिन ऊंचे पहाड़ों पर बरसने से वह एक जगह नहीं रुकता और नीचे की ओर बहता है, कई प्रकार के रंग-रूप और गंध में बदलता है। उसी प्रकार एक ही परमात्मा से जन्म लेने वाले देव, असुर और मनुष्य भी भगवान को अलग-अलग मानते हैं और अलग मानकर ही पूजा करते हैं। बारिश के जल की तरह ही सुर-असुर कई योनियों में भटकते रहते हैं।

नचिकेता प्रश्न : – कैसा है ब्रह्म का स्वरूप और वे कहां और कैसे प्रकट होते हैं?

यमराज उत्तर : – ब्रह्म प्राकृतिक गुणों से एकदम अलग हैं, वे स्वयं प्रकट होने वाले देवता हैं। इनका नाम वसु है। वे ही मेहमान बनकर हमारे घरों में आते हैं। यज्ञ में पवित्र अग्रि और उसमें आहुति देने वाले भी वसु देवता ही होते हैं। इसी तरह सभी मनुष्यों, श्रेष्ठ देवताओं, पितरों, आकाश और सत्य में स्थित होते हैं। जल में मछली हो या शंख, पृथ्वी पर पेड़-पौधे, अंकुर, अनाज, औषधि हो या पर्वतों में नदी, झरने और यज्ञ फल के तौर पर भी ब्रह्म ही प्रकट होते हैं। इस प्रकार ब्रह्म प्रत्यक्ष देव हैं।

नचिकेता प्रश्न : – आत्मा निकलने के बाद शरीर में क्या रह जाता है?

यमराज उत्तर : – जब आत्मा शरीर से निकल जाती है तो उसके साथ प्राण और इन्द्रिय ज्ञान भी निकल जाता है। मृत शरीर में क्या बाकी रहता है, यह नजर तो कुछ नहीं आता, लेकिन वह परब्रह्म उस शरीर में रह जाता है, जो हर चेतन और जड़ प्राणी में विद्यमान हैं।

नचिकेता प्रश्न : – मृत्यु के बाद आत्मा को क्यों और कौन सी योनियां मिलती हैं?

यमराज उत्तर : – यमदेव के अनुसार अच्छे और बुरे कामों और शास्त्र, गुरु, संगति, शिक्षा और व्यापार के माध्यम से देखी-सुनी बातों के आधार पर पाप-पुण्य होते हैं। इनके आधार पर ही आत्मा मनुष्य या पशु के रूप में नया जन्म प्राप्त करती है। जो लोग बहुत ज्यादा पाप करते हैं, वे मनुष्य और पशुओं के अतिरिक्त अन्य योनियों में जन्म पाते हैं। अन्य योनियां जैसे पेड़-पौध, पहाड़, तिनके आदि।

नचिकेता प्रश्न : – क्या है आत्मज्ञान और परमात्मा का स्वरूप?

यमराज उत्तर : – मृत्यु से जुड़े रहस्यों को जानने की शुरुआत बालक नचिकेता ने यमदेव से धर्म-अधर्म से संबंध रहित, कार्य-कारण रूप प्रकृति, भूत, भविष्य और वर्तमान से परे परमात्म तत्व के बारे में जिज्ञासा कर की।

यमदेव ने नचिकेता को ‘ऊँ’ को प्रतीक रूप में परब्रह्म का स्वरूप बताया। उन्होंने बताया कि अविनाशी प्रणव यानी ऊंकार ही परमात्मा का स्वरूप है। ऊंकार ही परमात्मा को पाने के सभी आश्रयों में सबसे सर्वश्रेष्ठ और अंतिम माध्यम है। सारे वेद कई तरह के छन्दों व मंत्रों में यही रहस्य बताए गए हैं। जगत में परमात्मा के इस नाम व स्वरूप की शरण लेना ही सबसे बेहतर उपाय है।

We find mention of the dialogue between Nachiketa and Yamraj in the Kathopanishad. When Nachiketa’s father started donating old and sick cows to Brahmins after Vishwajit Yagya, Nachiketa asked his father that to whom would you donate me? Then Nachiketa’s father filled with anger said that I will donate you to Yamraj. Since these words were uttered at the time of Yagya, Nachiketa had to go to Yamraj. Yamraj was out of his palace, so Nachiketa waited outside Yamraj’s palace for three days and three nights.

When Yamraj came after three days, he was pleased with this patient waiting and asked Nachiketa to ask for three boons. Nachiketa said in the first boon that when he returns home, his father should accept him and his father’s anger should subside. In the second boon, Nachiketa wanted to know whether the gods and goddesses remain immortal and immortal in heaven and move about fearlessly! Then Yamraj gave the knowledge of fire to Nachiketa, who is also known as Nachiketagni.

In the third boon, Nachiketa asked that ‘O Yamraj, I have heard that the soul is immortal. The cycle of death and life continues. But the soul is neither born nor dies.’ Nachiketa asked what is the secret of this death and birth? Is there any way to come out of this cycle? Then Yamraj said don’t ask this question, I will give you immense wealth, wealth, kingdom etc. in exchange for this question. But Nachiketa remained adamant and then Yamraj gave enlightenment to Nachiketa. The enlightenment attained by Nachiketa is relevant and world famous even today. Truth is always relevant.

Nachiketa Question: – How does the knowledge and philosophy of Brahma happen through the body?

Yamraj Answer: – The human body is like a city with 11 gates in the form of two eyes, two ears, two nostrils, one mouth, Brahmarandhra, navel, anus and penis, which is the city of Brahma. He lives in the heart of man. The person who meditates and thinks after understanding this secret, does not feel any kind of sorrow. People who do such meditation and contemplation become free from the bondage of birth and death even after death.

Nachiketa Question :- Does the soul die or kill?

Yamraj Answer :- Those who consider the soul to be killer or to die, they actually do not know the soul and are misguided. Their words should be ignored, because the soul neither dies nor can kill anyone.

Nachiketa Question: – How is it believed that God resides in the heart?

Yamraj Answer: – The heart of a man is considered to be the place of attaining Brahman. Yamdev told that only man is considered entitled to attain God. His heart is the size of a thumb. Therefore according to this Brahma is called the size of the thumb and a person who believes that God resides in his heart believes that Brahma is also present in the hearts of others in the same way. That’s why one should stay away from the evil or hatred of others.

Nachiketa Question: – What is the nature of the soul?

Yamraj Answer: According to Yamdev, the soul does not get destroyed with the destruction of the body. It has nothing to do with the enjoyment of the soul, the perishable, impermanent and inert body. It is eternal, eternal and faultless. There is no reason for it, no work, that is, it is neither born nor dies.

Nachiketa Question :- If a person does not know the knowledge of soul-soul, then how does he have to bear the fruits?

Yamraj Answer: – Just as the rain water is only one, but when it rains on the high mountains, it does not stop at one place and flows downwards, changing into many types of colors and smells. In the same way, devas, asuras and humans, who are born from the same Supreme Soul, also consider God as different and worship them as different. Like rain water, Sur-Asura keep wandering in many births.

Nachiketa Question :- What is the nature of Brahman and where and how does He appear?

Yamraj Answer :- Brahma is completely different from the natural qualities, He is the self-manifested deity. His name is Vasu. They are the ones who come to our homes as guests. The holy fire in the Yajna and the ones who offer sacrifices in it are also the gods of Vasu. In the same way all human beings, superior gods, ancestors, are situated in the sky and truth. Be it fish or conch shell in the water, be it trees and plants, sprouts, grains, medicines on the earth or in the form of rivers, waterfalls and yagya fruits in the mountains, only Brahma appears. Thus Brahman is the visible God.

Nachiketa Question: What remains in the body after the soul leaves?

Yamraj Answer: – When the soul leaves the body, the life force and sense knowledge also leave with it. What remains in the dead body is not visible, but that Parabrahma remains in that body, which is present in every conscious and non-living being.

Nachiketa Question :- Why and which species does the soul get after death?

Yamraj Answer: – According to Yamdev, there are sins and virtues on the basis of good and bad deeds and things seen and heard through scriptures, guru, association, education and business. It is on the basis of these that the soul takes a new birth in the form of a human or an animal. Those who commit a lot of sins are born in other forms of life other than humans and animals. Other vaginas like trees, mountains, straws etc.

Nachiketa Question: – What is Self-knowledge and the form of God?

Yamraj Answer: – The child Nachiketa began to know the secrets related to death by inquiring from Yamdev about the divine element beyond reason, nature, past, future and present, without relation to religion-unrighteousness.

Yamdev told Nachiketa ‘Om’ as the symbol of Parabrahma. He told that the imperishable Pranav i.e. Omkar is the form of God. Omkar is the best and the last medium of all the shelters to get God.
