महाभारत एक ऐसा ग्रन्थ है जिसमे अनेकों पौराणिक, धार्मिक कथा-कहानियों का संग्रह है। ऐसी ही एक कहानी है सावित्री और सत्यवान की, जिसका सर्वप्रथम वर्णन महाभारत के वनपर्व में मिलता है।
जब वन में गए युधिष्ठर, मार्कण्डेय मुनि से पूछते है की क्या कोई अन्य नारी भी द्रोपदी की जैसे पतिव्रता हुई है जो पैदा तो राजकुल में हुई है पर पतिव्रत धर्म निभाने के लिए जंगल-जंगल भटक रही है। तब मार्कण्डेय मुनि, युधिष्ठर को कहते है की पहले भी सावित्री नाम की एक नारी इससे भी कठिन पतिव्रत धर्म का पालन कर चुकी है और मुनि, युधिष्ठर को यह कथा सुनाते है।
मद्रदेश के अश्वपतिनाम का एक बड़ा ही धार्मिक राजा था। जिसकी पुत्री का नाम सावित्री था। सावित्री जब विवाह योग्य हो गई। तब महाराज उसके विवाह के लिए बहुत चिंतित थे। उन्होंने सावित्री से कहा बेटी अब तू विवाह के योग्य हो गयी है। इसलिए स्वयं ही अपने योग्य वर चुनकर उससे विवाह कर लें।
धर्मशास्त्र में ऐसी आज्ञा है कि विवाह योग्य हो जाने पर जो पिता कन्यादान नहीं करता, वह पिता निंदनीय है। ऋतुकाल में जो स्त्री से समागम नहीं करता वह पति निंदा का पात्र है। पति के मर जाने पर उस विधवा माता का जो पालन नहीं करता । वह पुत्र निंदनीय है।
तब सावित्री शीघ्र ही वर की खोज करने के लिए चल दी। वह राजर्षियों के रमणीय तपोवन में गई। कुछ दिन तक वह वर की तलाश में घुमती रही। एक दिन मद्रराज अश्वपति अपनी सभा में बैठे हुए देवर्षि बातें कर रहे थे। उसी समय मंत्रियों के सहित सावित्री समस्त वापस लौटी। तब राजा की सभा में नारदजी भी उपस्थित थे।
नारदजी ने जब राजकुमारी के बारे में राजा से पूछा तो राजा ने कहा कि वे अपने वर की तलाश में गई हैं। जब राजकुमारी दरबार पहुंची तो और राजा ने उनसे वर के चुनाव के बारे में पूछा तो उन्होंने बताया कि उन्होंने शाल्वदेश के राजा के पुत्र जो जंगल में पले-बढ़े हैं उन्हें पति रूप में स्वीकार किया है।
उनका नाम सत्यवान है। तब नारदमुनि बोले राजेन्द्र ये तो बहुत खेद की बात है क्योंकि इस वर में एक दोष है तब राजा ने पूछा वो क्या तो उन्होंने कहा जो वर सावित्री ने चुना है उसकी आयु कम है। वह सिर्फ एक वर्ष के बाद मरने वाला है।
उसके बाद वह अपना देहत्याग देगा। तब सावित्री ने कहा पिताजी कन्यादान एकबार ही किया जाता है जिसे मैंने एक बार वरण कर लिया है। मैं उसी से विवाह करूंगी आप उसे कन्यादान कर दें। उसके बाद सावित्री के द्वारा चुने हुए वर सत्यवान से धुमधाम और पूरे विधि-विधान से विवाह करवा दिया गया।
सत्यवान व सावित्री के विवाह को बहुत समय बीत गया। जिस दिन सत्यवान मरने वाला था वह करीब था। सावित्री एक-एक दिन गिनती रहती थी। उसके दिल में नारदजी का वचन सदा ही बना रहता था।
जब उसने देखा कि अब इन्हें चौथे दिन मरना है। उसने तीन दिन व्रत धारण किया। जब सत्यवान जंगल में लकड़ी काटने गया तो सावित्री ने उससे कहा कि मैं भी साथ चलुंगी।
तब सत्यवान ने सावित्री से कहा तुम व्रत के कारण कमजोर हो रही हो। जंगल का रास्ता बहुत कठिन और परेशानियों भरा है। इसलिए आप यहीं रहें। लेकिन सावित्री नहीं मानी उसने जिद पकड़ ली और सत्यवान के साथ जंगल की ओर चल दी।
सत्यवान जब लकड़ी काटने लगा तो अचानक उसकी तबीयत बिगडऩे लगी। वह सावित्री से बोला मैं स्वस्थ महसूस नही कर रहा हूं सावित्री मुझमें यहा बैठने की भी हिम्मत नहीं है।
तब सावित्री ने सत्यवान का सिर अपनी गोद में रख लिया। फिर वह नारदजी की बात याद करके दिन व समय का विचार करने लगी। इतने में ही उसे वहां एक बहुत भयानक पुरुष दिखाई दिया। जिसके हाथ में पाश था। वे यमराज थे। उन्होंने सावित्री से कहा तू पतिव्रता स्त्री है। इसलिए मैं तुझसे संभाषण कर लूंगा।
सावित्री ने कहा आप कौन है तब यमराज ने कहा मैं यमराज हूं। इसके बाद यमराज सत्यवान के शरीर में से प्राण निकालकर उसे पाश में बांधकर दक्षिण दिशा की ओर चल दिए।
सावित्री बोली मेरे पतिदेव को जहां भी ले जाया जाएगा मैं भी वहां जाऊंगी। तब यमराज ने उसे समझाते हुए कहा मैं उसके प्राण नहीं लौटा सकता तू मनचाहा वर मांग ले।
तब सावित्री ने वर में अपने श्वसुर के आंखे मांग ली। यमराज ने कहा तथास्तु लेकिन वह फिर उनके पीछे चलने लगी। तब यमराज ने उसे फिर समझाया और वर मांगने को कहा उसने दूसरा वर मांगा कि मेरे श्वसुर को उनका राज्य वापस मिल जाए।
उसके बाद तीसरा वर मांगा मेरे पिता जिन्हें कोई पुत्र नहीं हैं उन्हें सौ पुत्र हों। यमराज ने फिर कहा सावित्री तुम वापस लौट जाओ चाहो तो मुझसे कोई और वर मांग लो। तब सावित्री ने कहा मुझे सत्यवान से सौ यशस्वी पुत्र हों।
यमराज ने कहा तथास्तु। यमराज फिर सत्यवान के प्राणों को अपने पाश में जकड़े आगे बढऩे लगे। सावित्री ने फिर भी हार नहीं मानी तब यमराज ने कहा तुम वापस लौट जाओ तो सावित्री ने कहा मैं कैसे वापस लौट जाऊं ।
आपने ही मुझे सत्यवान से सौ यशस्वी पुत्र उत्पन्न करने का आर्शीवाद दिया है। तब यमराज ने सत्यवान को पुन: जीवित कर दिया। उसके बाद सावित्री सत्यवान के शव के पास पहुंची और थोड़ी ही देर में सत्यवान के शव में चेतना आ गई
Mahabharata is such a book in which there is a collection of many mythological, religious stories. One such story is that of Savitri and Satyavan, which is first described in the Mahabharata’s Vanparva.
When Yudhishthira went to the forest, he asked Markandeya Muni whether any other woman had become chaste like Draupadi, who was born in a royal family, but is wandering in the jungles to follow her chaste religion. Then Markandeya Muni tells Yudhishthira that earlier also a woman named Savitri has followed even more difficult husbandry religion and Muni tells this story to Yudhishthira.
Ashwapatinam of Madradesh was a very religious king. Whose daughter’s name was Savitri. When Savitri became marriageable. Then Maharaj was very worried about her marriage. He said to Savitri, daughter, now you are eligible for marriage. That’s why choose your own eligible groom and marry him.
There is such an order in the scriptures that the father who does not do Kanyadan after becoming eligible for marriage, that father is reprehensible. The husband who does not have intercourse with the woman during the season deserves condemnation. The widow who does not follow the mother after the death of her husband. That son is condemnable.
Then Savitri quickly went to search for the groom. She went to the delightful Tapovan of Rajarshi. For some days she wandered in search of a groom. One day Madraraj Ashwapati was talking about Devarshi while sitting in his assembly. At the same time Savitri along with the ministers all returned. Then Naradji was also present in the king’s assembly.
When Naradji asked the king about the princess, the king said that she had gone in search of her groom. When the princess reached the court and the king asked her about the choice of a groom, she told that she had accepted the son of the king of Shalvadesh who grew up in the forest as her husband.
His name is Satyavan. Then Naradmuni said, Rajendra, this is a matter of great regret, because there is a fault in this bridegroom, then the king asked what is that, then he said that the groom chosen by Savitri has a short life. He is going to die after just one year.
After that he will give up his body. Then Savitri said, father, Kanyadan is done only once, which I have done once. I will marry her, you give her the daughter-in-law. After that, Savitri’s chosen groom Satyavan was married with pomp and full rituals.
A long time has passed since the marriage of Satyavan and Savitri. The day Satyavan was about to die was near. Savitri used to count every day. Naradji’s promise always remained in his heart.
When he saw that now he has to die on the fourth day. He fasted for three days. When Satyavan went to cut wood in the forest, Savitri told him that she would also go with him.
Then Satyavan told Savitri that you are getting weak because of the fast. The path of the forest is very difficult and full of difficulties. That’s why you stay here. But Savitri did not agree, she took her stubbornness and went towards the forest with Satyavan.
When Satyavan started cutting wood, suddenly his health started deteriorating. He said to Savitri, I am not feeling well, Savitri, I do not even have the courage to sit here.
Then Savitri kept Satyavan’s head in her lap. Then remembering Naradji’s words, she started thinking about the day and time. In the meantime, he saw a very terrible man there. Who had a noose in his hand. He was Yamraj. He told Savitri that you are a chaste woman. That’s why I will talk to you.
Savitri said who are you then Yamraj said I am Yamraj. After this, Yamraj took out the soul from Satyavan’s body and tied it in a noose and went towards the south.
Savitri said, wherever my husband is taken, I will also go there. Then Yamraj explained to him and said that I cannot return his life, you can ask for the desired groom.
Then Savitri asked for the eyes of her father-in-law in marriage. Yamraj said Amen but she started following him again. Then Yamraj explained to him again and asked him to ask for a boon. He asked for another boon so that my father-in-law would get his kingdom back.
After that, asked for the third boon, my father who has no sons should have hundred sons. Yamraj again said Savitri, you go back, if you want, ask me for some other groom. Then Savitri said that I should have hundred successful sons from Satyavan.
Yamraj said Amen. Yamraj again started moving forward holding Satyavan’s life in his noose. Savitri still did not give up, then Yamraj said you go back, then Savitri said how can I go back.
You have blessed me to beget hundred successful sons from Satyavan. Then Yamraj brought Satyavan back to life. After that Savitri reached near Satyawan’s dead body and in a short while Satyawan’s dead body regained consciousness.
