ज्ञानपिपासु
एक गुरुके दो शिष्य थे। एक पढ़नेमें तेज था और दूसरा फिसड्डी। पहला शिष्य जहाँ भी जाता, उसकी इबत होती, जबकि दूसरेको कहीं सम्मान नहीं मिलता। एक दिन फिसड्डी शिष्य गुरुके पास गया और कहने लगा- ‘गुरुजी! मैं तो इस लड़केसे पहले आपके पास आया था, परंतु आपने इसे मुझसे ज्यादा शिक्षा दी।’
गुरुजी कुछ देर मौन रहनेके बादबोले-‘एक राही जा रहा था। वह प्यासा था। उसने रास्तेमें एक कुआँ देखा। वहाँ बाल्टी तो थी, परंतु रस्सी नहीं थी। अतः वह आगे बढ़ गया। कुछ देर बाद दूसरा राहगीर आया, वह भी प्यासा था, परंतु जब उसने देखा कि वहाँ सिर्फ बाल्टी है तो उसने इधर-उधर नजर दौड़ायी। पास ही लम्बी घास थी तो उसने घास उखाड़ी और उसे बटकर रस्सी बनायी। थोड़ी ही देरमें लम्बी रस्सी तैयार हो गयी। उसने रस्सीकी सहायतासे बाल्टी कुएँमें डालकर पानी निकाला और अपनी प्यास बुझायी ।
कहानी सुनाकर गुरुने शिष्यसे पूछा-‘अच्छा बताओ, तेज प्यास किसे लगी थी ?’ शिष्य बोला-‘दूसरे राहगीरको; क्योंकि उसने प्यास बुझानेके लिये परिश्रम किया।’
तब गुरुने शिष्यको समझाते हुए कहा- ‘बस यही बात है। तुम्हारे सहपाठीको भी ज्ञानकी तेज प्यास है, जो वह मेहनत करके पढ़ाईसे प्यास बुझाता है। तुम्हें ज्ञानकी प्यास नहीं है।’ शिष्य निरुत्तर हो गया। उसने गुरुको प्रणाम किया और पढ़ाईमें जुट गया।
Knowledgeable
A teacher had two disciples. One was fast in studies and the other was lazy. Wherever the first disciple went, he was praised, whereas the second one did not get any respect. One day the lazy disciple went to the teacher and said – ‘ Guruji! I came to you before this boy, but you taught him more than me.’
Guruji said after remaining silent for some time – ‘A traveler was going. He was thirsty. He saw a well on the way. There was a bucket, but there was no rope. So he went ahead. After some time another passenger came, he was also thirsty, but when he saw that there was only a bucket, he looked here and there. There was long grass nearby, so he uprooted the grass and split it into a rope. A long rope was ready in no time. With the help of a rope, he drew water by pouring a bucket into the well and quenched his thirst.
After telling the story, the teacher asked the disciple – ‘Well tell me, who was very thirsty?’ The disciple said – ‘ To the other passerby; Because he worked hard to quench his thirst.’
Then the Guru explained to the disciple and said – ‘That’s all. Your classmate also has a strong thirst for knowledge, which he quenches his thirst by studying hard. You are not thirsty for knowledge.’ The disciple became speechless. He bowed down to the Guru and started studying.
