सच्ची न्यायनिष्ठा

बादशाह जहाँगीरमें चाहे जितनी दुर्बलताएँ रही हों; किंतु वह प्रजावत्सल एवं न्यायप्रिय शासक था, इस बातको उसके शत्रु भी अस्वीकार नहीं कर सके। उसके राजमहल में घंटा बँधा था, जिसकी रस्सी महलसे बाहर लटकती रहती थी। कोई भी, कभी भी उस रस्सीको खींच सकता था, यदि उसे बादशाहसे किसी विषयमें न्याय पाना हो। रस्सी खींचते ही महलमें बँधा घंटा बजने लगता था ।

एक समय शामको ही एक स्त्रीने घंटाकी रस्सी खींची। बादशाह उसी समय झरोखेपर आये। वह एक निर्धन नारी थी और बुरी तरह रो रही थी। पूछनेपर उसने बताया कि वह राजमहलके पास ही एक बगीचेके मालीकी स्त्री है। किसीने राजमहलसे बाण चलाया, जो उसके पतिकी छातीमें लगा। उसका पति तुरंत बाण लगने से मर गया।

बादशाहने उसे सबेरे दरबारमें आनेका हुक्म दिया। राजमहलमें पूछनेपर पता लग गया कि बादशाहकी प्राणप्रिया बेगम मुमताज महल चमगादड़ोंपर निशानालगा रही थीं। उनका ही एक बाण भटककर दूर गया था। बादशाह गम्भीर हो गये। उस रात उन्हें तनिक भी नींद नहीं आयी।

दूसरे दिन दरबारमें बड़ी गड़बड़ी मची। एक ओरसे सभी सरदार और अमीर विरोध करने लगे ‘कुछ भी हो, शाही बेगम एक मुल्जिमके समान दरबारमें नहीं बुलायी जा सकतीं।’

बादशाह बहुत गम्भीर हो रहे थे। उन्होंने अन्तमें कहा- ‘मालिन! तुम देखती हो कि मैं भी तुम्हारे मुल्जिमको यहाँ बुला नहीं सकता हूँ। लेकिन जहाँगीर अन्याय नहीं होने देगा। बेगमने तुम्हें विधवा बनाया है, तुम उसे विधवा बना दो !’

अपनी कटार नंगी करके बादशाहने उस मालिनको पकड़ा दी और तख्तसे उतरकर उसके सामने उन्होंने अपना सीना कर दिया। कटार मालिनके हाथसे गिर पड़ी। वह अपने उदार बादशाहको प्रणाम करने झुक गयी थी।

No matter how many weaknesses were there in Emperor Jahangir; But he was a democratic and justice-loving ruler, even his enemies could not deny this fact. A bell was tied in his palace, whose rope used to hang outside the palace. Anyone, anytime could pull that rope, if he wanted to get justice from the king in any matter. As soon as the rope was pulled, the bell tied in the palace started ringing.
Once upon a time in the evening, a woman pulled the rope of the bell. At the same time the king came to the window. She was a poor woman and was crying badly. On asking, she told that she is the wife of a gardener near the palace. Someone shot an arrow from the palace, which hit her husband’s chest. Her husband died immediately after being hit by an arrow.
The king ordered him to come to the court early in the morning. On inquiring in the palace, it was found that Mumtaz Mahal, Pranpriya Begum of the emperor, was targeting bats. One of his arrows went astray and went far away. The king became serious. That night he could not sleep at all.
On the second day there was a big disturbance in the court. On the one hand, all the Sardars and Amirs started protesting, ‘Whatever it may be, the Shahi Begum cannot be called in the court like an accused.’
The emperor was getting very serious. At last he said- ‘Malin! You see that even I cannot call your accused here. But Jahangir would not allow injustice to happen. Begum has made you a widow, you make her a widow!’
Undressing his dagger, the king caught hold of that mistress and got down from the throne and laid his chest in front of her. The dagger fell from the hand of the master. She bowed down to bow down to her generous king.
