सन् 1927 में ‘स्टूडेंट्स वर्ल्ड फेडरेशन’ का अधिवेशन मैसूरमें हुआ। अमेरिकाके रेवरेंड मॉट् उसके अध्यक्ष थे। वे जब भारत आये तब गांधीजीसे मिलनेके लिये उन्होंने समय चाहा। उन दिनों गांधीजीको अवकाश बहुत कम मिलता था। इसलिये उन्होंने उन्हें रातमें सोनेके पहले दस मिनटका समय दिया। कई लोग इस कुतूहलसे कि ‘देखें दस मिनटमें ये लोग क्या बातें करते हैं’ वहाँ जा उपस्थित हुए।
गांधीजी आँगनमें सोये हुए थे। रेवरेंड मॉट्ने अपने प्रश्न लिख रखे थे और उन्हें लेकर वे एक बेंचपर बैठ गये। उन्होंने पूछा कि ‘आपको ऐसी क्या वस्तु दिखी जिससे अधिक आश्वासन मिलता है ?’
गांधीजीने कहा- ‘कितनी ही छेड़छाड़ करनेपर भी यहाँके लोगोंके मनसे अहिंसा वृत्ति नहीं जाती। इससे मुझे बहुत आश्वासन मिलता है।”और कौन-सी ऐसी चीज है, जिससे दिन-रात आप चिन्तित तथा अस्वस्थ रहते हैं ?’ मॉट्ने पूछा। ‘शिक्षित लोगोंके अंदरसे दयाभाव सूखता जा रहा
है। इससे मैं सर्वदा चिन्तित रहता हूँ । ‘ गांधीजीके उत्तरसे मॉट् तथा दर्शक चकरा गये। कालेलकरजीके मनपर इसका इतना प्रभाव पड़ा कि उन्होंने तत्काल ‘ग्राम-सेवा-अभ्यासक्रम’ आरम्भ किया। एक बार एक ऐंग्लो-इंडियनने, जो किसी जेलका
साधारण नौकर था, गांधीजीसे autograph (स्वाक्षरी अपने हाथका लिखा कोई वाक्य तथा हस्ताक्षर ) माँगा। उन्होंने लिखा- ‘It does not cost to be kind— (दयालु बननेमें कुछ भी खर्च नहीं पड़ता)।’ कहते हैं कि इस वाक्यसे उस व्यक्तिका स्वभाव ही बदल गया।

In 1927, the convention of ‘Students World Federation’ was held in Mysore. Reverend Mott of America was its president. When he came to India, he sought time to meet Gandhiji. In those days, Gandhiji got very little leave. So he gave them ten minutes before going to sleep at night. Many people went there out of curiosity to ‘see what these people talk about in ten minutes’.
Gandhiji was sleeping in the courtyard. Reverend Moutney had written down his questions and took them and sat down on a bench. He asked, ‘What do you see that gives more assurance?’
Gandhiji said- ‘No matter how much harassment is done, the attitude of non-violence does not go away from the minds of the people here. This gives me a lot of assurance.’ ‘And what is the thing that keeps you worried and unwell day and night?’ Motney asked. ‘Kindness is drying up in educated people’
