दुर्गादास था तो धनी किसान; किन्तु बहुत आलसी था| वह न अपने खेत देखने जाता था, न खलिहान| अपनी गाय-भैंसों की भी वह खोज-खबर नहीं रखता था| सब काम वह नौकरों पर छोड़ देता था|
उसके आलस और कुप्रबन्ध से उसके घर की व्यवस्था बिगड़ गयी| उसको खेती में हानि होने लगी| गायों के दूध-घी से भी उसे कोई अच्छा लाभ नहीं होता था|
एक दिन दुर्गादास का मित्र हरिश्चंद्र उसके घर आया| हरिश्चंद्र ने दुर्गादास के घर का हाल देखा| उसने यह समझ लिया कि समझाने से आलसी दुर्गादास अपना स्वभाव नहीं छोड़ेगा| इसलिये उसने अपने मित्र दुर्गादास की भलाई करने के लिये उससे कहा- ‘मित्र! तुम्हारी विपत्ति देखकर मुझे बड़ा दुःख हो रहा है| तुम्हारी दरिद्रता को दूर करने का एक सरल उपाय मैं जानता हूँ|’
दुर्गादास- ‘कृपा करके वह उपाय तुम मुझे बता दो| मैं उसे अवश्य करूँगा|’
हरिश्चंद्र- ‘सब पक्षियों के जागने से पहले ही मानसरोवर रहने वाला एक सफेद हंस पृथ्वी पर आता है| वह दो पहर दिन चढ़े लौट जाता है| यह तो पता नहीं कि वह कब कहाँ आवेगा; किन्तु जो उसका दर्शन कर लेता है, उसको कभी किसी बात की कमी नहीं होती|’
दुर्गादास- ‘कुछ भी हो, मैं उस हंस का दर्शन अवश्य करूँगा|’
हरिश्चंद्र चला गया| दुर्गादास दूसरे दिन बड़े सबेरे उठा| वह घर से बाहर निकला और हँस की खोज में खलिहान में गया| वहाँ उसने देखा कि एक आदमी उसके ढेर से गेहूँ अपने ढेर में डालने के लिये उठा रहा है| दुर्गादास को देखकर वह लज्जित हो गया और क्षमा माँगने लगा|
खलिहान से वह घर लौट आया और गोशाला में गया| वहाँ का रखवाला गाय का दूध दुहकर अपनी स्त्री के लोटे में डाल रहा था| दुर्गादास ने उसे डांटा| घरपर जलपान करके हंस की खोज में वह फिर निकला और खेत पर गया| उसने देखा कि खेत पर अबतक मजदूर आये ही नहीं थे| वह वहाँ रुक गया| जब मजदूर आये तो उन्हें देर से आने का उसने उलाहना दिया| इस प्रकार वह जहाँ गया, वहीं उसकी कोई-न-कोई हानि रुक गयी|
सफेद हंस की खोज में दुर्गादास प्रतिदिन सबेरे उठने और घुमने लगा| अब उसके नौकर ठीक काम करने लगे| उसके यहाँ चोरी होनी बंद हो गयी| पहिले वह रोगी रहता था, अब उसका स्वास्थ्य भी ठीक हो गया| जिस खेत से उसे दस मन अन्न मिलता था, उससे अब पचीस मन मिलने लगा| गोशाला से दूध बहुत अधिक आने लगा|
एक दिन फिर दुर्गादास का मित्र हरिश्चंद्र उसके घर आया| दुर्गादास ने कहा- ‘मित्र! सफेद हंस तो मुझे अब तक नहीं दिखा; किन्तु उसकी खोज में लगने से मुझे लाभ बहुत हुआ है|’
*हरिश्चंद्र हँस पड़ा और बोला- ‘परिश्रम करना ही वह सफेद हंस है| परिश्रम के पंख सदा उजले होते हैं| जो परिश्रम न करके अपना काम नौकरों पर छोड़ देता है, वह हानि उठाता है और जो स्वयं करता है, वह सम्पत्ति और सम्मान पाता है

Durgadas was a rich farmer; But was very lazy. He neither went to see his fields nor the barn. He did not even keep track of his cows and buffaloes. He used to leave all the work to the servants.
Due to his laziness and mismanagement, the arrangement of his house deteriorated. He started facing loss in farming. He did not get any good benefit even from the milk and ghee of the cows.
One day Durgadas’s friend Harishchandra came to his house. Harishchandra saw the condition of Durgadas’s house. He understood that by persuading the lazy Durgadas would not give up his nature. That’s why he told him to do good to his friend Durgadas- ‘Friend! I am very sad to see your calamity. I know a simple way to remove your poverty.’
Durgadas- ‘Please tell me that solution. I will definitely do that.’
Harishchandra- ‘Before all the birds wake up, a white swan living in Mansarovar comes to the earth. He goes back at two o’clock every day. It is not known when and where he will come; But the one who sees him, he never lacks anything.
Durgadas- ‘Whatever happens, I will definitely see that swan.’
Harishchandra left. Durgadas woke up early in the morning the next day. He came out of the house and went to the barn in search of the goose. There he saw a man lifting wheat from his heap to put it in his heap. Seeing Durgadas, he felt ashamed and started apologizing.
He returned home from the threshing floor and went to the cowshed. The caretaker there was milking the cow and pouring it into his wife’s pot. Durgadas scolded him. After having breakfast at home, he again went out in search of swan and went to the farm. He saw that the laborers had not yet come to the farm. He stopped there. When the laborers came, he scolded them for coming late. In this way, wherever he went, there one or the other harm was stopped.
Durgadas started getting up early in the morning and roaming around in search of a white swan. Now his servants started working properly. Thefts stopped at his place. Earlier he used to be sick, now his health has also recovered. The field from which he used to get ten maunds of grain, now he got twenty-five maunds from it. Milk started coming in abundance from the cowshed.
One day again Durgadas’s friend Harishchandra came to his house. Durgadas said – ‘ Friend! I haven’t seen the white swan yet; But I have benefited a lot by being in search of him.
* Harishchandra laughed and said-‘ To work hard is that white swan. The wings of hard work are always bright. The one who does not work hard and leaves his work to the servants, suffers loss and the one who does it himself, gets wealth and honor.
