Devraj Indra was praising the ascetic nature of a king named Shrenik in his assembly. Hearing that praise, a god had a desire to test the king. The deities came to the earth and went around the road by which the king was coming to the city, disguised as a monk, sat on a pond and pretended to be fishing. If the king comes out from there, it is opposite to the sages.
Seeing his conduct, he said- ‘Hey! What wrongdoing are you doing?’
The monk said – ‘ Rajan! i don’t talk about religion
knows. I will sell them after killing fish and buy a blanket for the winters with the money received.
‘You seem to be one of the creatures wandering in the cycle of birth and death.’ Having said this, the king went on his way.
The gods returned to heaven. On asking, he said to Devraj – ‘Truly that king is a monk. His wisdom is situated in equanimity. He has given up condemning and hating the sinful, the evildoer; It only means that he is not proud of his good deed.
