Shri Ishwarchandra Vidyasagar used to keep checking while walking that no one needed his service. One day he was going somewhere in Calcutta. His eyes fell on a person who was walking with his head down, very sad. Vidyasagar asked – ‘Why are you so sad?’ Vidyasagar neither recognized him nor he him. Seeing a stranger asking like this, he took a long breath and said – ‘I am struck by calamity, brother!’
‘Who are you? What’s wrong with you?’ Vidyasagar asked again; But thinking of Vidyasagar, who lives in very simple clothes, as an ordinary poor man, he said, ‘ What will you do after hearing this! You can’t be of any help.’
Vidyasagar was not the one to give up. On his request, he told his calamity. He was a poor Brahmin. He had to take a loan for his daughter’s marriage and now the Mahajan had claimed it. There was no arrangement to give Rs. Vidyasagar sympathized with the Brahmin by asking his name, address and in which court the case was pending and he left.
When the Brahmin appeared in the court on the date of the case, he came to know that someone has deposited the money on his behalf, the case is over. He started thinking – ‘Which generous man showed mercy to him?” But how could it have occurred to him that this could be the work of a very ordinary looking person he met on the way. – Su 0 Sin 0
