आदर्श मित्र

हिष्मक राष्ट्रमें सुकुल नामका एक धर्मात्मा राजा राज्य करता था। नगरके पास ही एक व्याध पक्षियोंको फँसाकर उन्हें बेचकर अपनी जीविका चलाता था। वहींपर एक बड़ा लंबा-चौड़ा ‘मानस’ नामका सरोवर था। व्याध वहीं जाल फैलाया करता था। वहाँ अनेकों प्रकारके पक्षी दल के दल आया करते थे। उस समयहंसोंका राजा चित्रकूट पर्वतकी गुफामें रहा करता था । एक बार हंसोंने आकर उससे अपना समाचार कहा तथा उस सरोवरकी बड़ी प्रशंसा की, साथ ही वहाँ चलनेकी प्रार्थना भी की। हंसराजने कहा- ‘यद्यपि वहाँ चलना ठीक नहीं है तथापि तुम लोगोंका आग्रह ही है तो चलो एक बार देख आयें।’ ऐसा कहकर वह भी अपनेपरिवारके साथ चल पड़ा। सरोवरके पास पहुँचकर हंसराज अभी उतर ही रहा था कि जालमें फँस गया, तथापि उसने धीरजसे काम लिया और घबराया नहीं; क्योंकि वह जानता था कि यदि घबराकर होहल्ला मचाऊँगा तो ये सभी हंस भूखे ही भाग जायँगे ।

शामको जब चलनेकी बारी आयी और सबने हंससे चलनेको कहा तब उसने अपनी स्थिति बतला दी। अब क्या था, सभी हंस भाग चले। बस, केवल उसका मन्त्री सुमुख रह गया हंसराजने उससे भी भाग जानेको कहा और व्यर्थ प्राण देनेमें कोई लाभ न होनेकी बात बतलायी पर सुमुखने कहा- मैं आज यहाँसे भाग भी जाऊँ तो भी अमर तो होऊँगा नहीं।हाँ, मेरा धर्म चला जायगा इसलिये मैं प्राण देकर भी अपने धर्मकी रक्षा करूँगा और तुम्हें बचाऊँगा ।’ ऐसा कहकर वह वहीं रह गया।

दूसरे दिन प्रातःकाल व्याध आया। उसने देखा कि एक स्वतन्त्र हंस भी यों ही डटा है तो उसके पास जाकर कारण पूछा। उसने अपनी सारी बात बतलायी। | व्याधने कहा- ‘तू चला जा, मैं तुझे जीवन-दान देता हूँ।’ सुमुखने कहा- ‘ -‘नहीं, तू मुझे खा ले या बेच डाल, पर मेरे राजाको छोड़ दे।’ इसपर व्याधका हृदय द्रवित हो गया और उसने यह कहकर हंसराजको छोड़ दिया कि ‘सुमुख-जैसे मित्र किसी बिरलेके ही भाग्यमें होंगे।’

A pious king named Sukul used to rule in Hismaka nation. A hunter used to make his living by trapping birds and selling them near the city. There was a big wide lake named ‘Manas’. The hunter used to spread the trap there. There used to be groups of many different types of birds. At that time the king of swans used to live in the cave of Chitrakoot mountain. Once the swans came and told him their news and praised that lake a lot, as well as prayed to walk there. Hansraj said- ‘Though it is not right to walk there, yet you people insist, so let’s come and see once.’ Having said this, he too left with his family. Hansraj was just getting down after reaching the lake that he got trapped in the net, however he acted patiently and did not panic; Because he knew that if he created a ruckus out of fear, all these swans would run away hungry.
In the evening, when it was his turn to walk and everyone asked him to walk with a smile, he told his situation. What was it now, all the swans ran away. That’s all, only his minister Sumukh was left. I will protect my religion even by giving and will save you.’ Saying this he stayed there.
The second day the disease came in the morning. He saw that even a free swan was standing like this, so he went to him and asked the reason. He told his whole story. , The hunter said – ‘You go, I will give you life.’ Sumukh said – ‘No, you can eat me or sell me, but leave my king.’ The doctor’s heart melted at this and he left Hansraj saying that ‘friends like Sumukh will be in the fortune of a rare person’.
