bound by the ropes of desires
A Sufi saint was leaving the market. Along with it there was also a gathering of disciples. He saw that a man was being taken along with him holding a singing rope. He stopped him and asked the disciples to tell who is tied with whom, man with this cow or cow with this man?
The disciple immediately spoke up – only the cow is tied with the man. He can drag it wherever he wants. The saint smiled and said – Now look, saying this, he took out scissors from his belongings and cut the rope of the singer. The cow ran fast as soon as the rope was cut. Its owner ran and caught the cow back with great difficulty.
The saint explained – this lady has no interest in this man, that’s why she ran away as soon as the rope was cut. In fact, it is that man who is bound to this cow. We all are also bound by our own desires to many things and yet we consider ourselves free and servants of God.
