गाली कहाँ जायगी

भारद्वाज नामका एक ब्राह्मण भगवान् बुद्धसे दीक्षा लेकर भिक्षु हो गया था। उसका एक सम्बन्धी इससे अत्यन्त क्षुब्ध होकर तथागतके समीप पहुँचा और उन्हें अपशब्द कहने लगा। बुद्धदेव तो देव ही ठहरे, देवताके समान ही वे शान्त और मौन बने रहे। ब्राह्मण अन्ततः अकेला कहाँतक गाली देता, वह थककर चुप हो गया। अब तथागतने पूछा अतिथि आते हैं ?’ – ‘क्यों भाई ! तुम्हारे घर कभी

‘आते तो हैं।’ ब्राह्मणने उत्तर दिया।

‘तुम उनका सत्कार करते हो ?’ बुद्धने पूछा।

ब्राह्मण खीझकर बोला –’ अतिथिका सत्कार कौनमूर्ख नहीं करेगा।’

तथागत बोले – ‘मान लो कि तुम्हारी अर्पित वस्तुएँ अतिथि स्वीकार न करे तो वे कहाँ जायँगी ?’ ब्राह्मणने फिर झुंझलाकर कहा – ‘वे जायँगी कहाँ, अतिथि उन्हें नहीं लेगा तो वे मेरे पास रहेंगी।’

‘तो भद्र!’ बुद्धने शान्तिसे कहा – ‘तुम्हारी दी हुई गालियाँ मैं स्वीकार नहीं करता। अब यह गाली कहाँ जायगी ? किसके पास रहेगी ?”

ब्राह्मणका मस्तक लज्जासे झुक गया। उसने भगवान् बुद्ध क्षमा माँगी।

A Brahmin named Bhardwaj had become a monk after taking initiation from Lord Buddha. One of his relatives got very upset with this and reached near Tathagat and started abusing him. Buddhadev remained a god, like a god he remained calm and silent. At last, till when the Brahmin used to abuse alone, he got tired and became silent. Now Tathagata asked, do the guests come? – ‘Why brother ! your home ever
‘He does come.’ Brahmin replied.
‘Do you welcome them?’ Buddha asked.
The Brahmin said angrily – ‘Which fool will not entertain the guest.’
Tathagat said – ‘Suppose if the guest does not accept your offered things, where will they go?’ The Brahmin again angrily said – ‘Where will she go, if the guest does not take her, she will stay with me.’
‘Then gentleman!’ Buddha said peacefully – ‘ I do not accept your abuses. Where will this abuse go now? Who will have it?”
The Brahmin’s head bowed down in shame. He apologized to Lord Buddha.
