देशके लिये बलिदान

रूस और जापानका युद्ध चल रहा था। पिछले महासमरकी बात नहीं कही जा रही है। रूस था जारका सम्राज्यवादी रूस और जापान था एशियाको विकासोन्मुख शक्ति। जारने कहा था-‘रूसी टोपियाँ फेक देंगे तो जापानी बौना पिस जायगा।’

युद्धके मैदानमें सभीको कभी आगे बढ़ने और कभी पीछे हटनेका अवसर आता है। एशियन फौजोंके दबावसे जापानी सैनिकोंको एक पर्वतीय टीला खाली करके पीछे हटना पड़ा। दूसरी सब सामग्री तो हटा ली यी किंतु एक विशाल तोप पीछे छूट गयी।

सारी सेना पीछे सुरक्षित हट गयी थी, निश्चिन्त थी; किंतु तोपचीको शान्ति नहीं थी। ‘मेरी ही तोपसे कल शत्रु मेरे देशके सैनिकोंको भूनना प्रारम्भ करेगा।’ तोपचीको यह चिन्ता खाये जा रही थी। रूसी सैनिकोंके पास बड़ी तोपें नहीं थीं यह पहिली बड़ी तोप उन्हें मिलनेवाली थी। तोपचीसे रहा नहीं गया। वह रात्रिके अन्धकारमें शिविरसे निकल पड़ा। वृक्षोंकी आड़ लेता. पेटके बल खिसकता पहाड़ीपर जा पहुँचा।

तोपची तोपके पास पहुँच तो गया; किंतु करे क्या ?इतनी भारी तोप उस अकेलेसे हिलतक नहीं सकती थी। वह उसका एक पुर्जा भी तोड़ने लगे तो शत्रु जाग जाय और उसे पकड़ ले। अन्तमें कुछ सोचकर वह तोपकी भारी नलीमें घुस गया। बाहर बर्फ पड़ रही थी, तोपकी नलीके भीतर तोपचीकी हड्डियाँतक जैसे फटी जा रही थीं। वह दाँत-पर-दाँत दबाये पड़ा था। उसकी पीड़ा असह्य हो गयी थी ।

सबेरा हुआ। एशियन सैनिक-सेनानायकोंने तोपको चारों ओरसे घूमकर देखा। उसकी परीक्षा करनेका निश्चय करके गोला-बारूद भरवाया उसमें पलीता दिया गया और सामनेका वृक्ष रक्तसे लाल हो गया। नलीमें घुसे तोपचीके चिथड़े उड़ चुके अन्धविश्वासी जारके सैनिक चिल्लाये – ‘धूर्त जापानी तोपपर कोई जादू कर गये हैं। इसमें शैतान बैठा गये हैं जो नलीसे खून उगल रहा है। पहाड़ी छोड़कर भागो जल्दी ।

तोपको वहीं छोड़कर वे सब भाग खड़े हुए। जापानी सेना फिर लौटी वहाँ और उसके नायकने तोपचीके सम्मानमें वहाँ स्मारक बनाकर सलामी दी।

The war between Russia and Japan was going on. The past great war is not being talked about. Russia was the imperialist Russia and Japan was the developing power of Asia. Jarne had said – ‘If you throw away Russian caps, the Japanese dwarf will be crushed.’
In the battlefield everyone gets the opportunity to move forward and sometimes to retreat. Due to the pressure of the Asian forces, the Japanese soldiers had to retreat by vacating a mountain mound. All other material was removed but a huge cannon was left behind.
The whole army had retreated safely, it was relaxed; But the gunners had no peace. ‘Tomorrow the enemy will start roasting the soldiers of my country with my cannon.’ The artillerymen were getting worried. Russian soldiers did not have big guns, this was the first big gun they were going to get. The artillery could not stop. He left the camp in the dark of night. Takes cover of trees. Slipping on his stomach, he reached the hill.
The gunner has reached near the cannon; But what to do? Such a heavy cannon could not move alone. If he starts breaking even a part of it, the enemy wakes up and catches him. At last, after thinking something, he entered the heavy barrel of the cannon. It was snowing outside, even the bones of the gunner were cracking inside the cannon barrel. He was gritting his teeth. His pain had become unbearable.
It’s morning Asian soldiers and generals looked at the cannon from all sides. Deciding to test it, ammunition was loaded into it and the tree in front turned red with blood. The superstitious soldiers shouted, ‘The cunning Japanese have cast some spell on the cannon. Satan is sitting in it who is spewing blood from the hose. Leave the hill and run quickly.
They all ran away leaving the cannon there. The Japanese army then returned there and its hero saluted by erecting a monument there in honor of the gunner.
