ब्रज में बसंत पंचमी से फाल्गुन पूर्णिमा तक 40 दिवसीय होली मनाई जाती है, इसलिये कहा भी गया है सारे जग में होरी और ब्रज में होरा। एक बार श्री राधा जी अपनी सखियों के साथ बैठी थी और उनसे होली मनाने की चर्चा कर रही थी तभी कुछ देर बाद वहां कान्हा जी आये वो भी उनकी वार्तालाप सुनने लगे और बोले की हम भी तुम्हारे साथ होली खेलेंगे।
श्री राधा जी ने कहा की ठीक है पर यदि आप 3 बार में मेरे मुख मंडल पर रंग ना लगा पाये तो आपके नयनों पर मैं काजल लगाऊँगी। कान्हा जी ने कहा ठीक है।
अगले दिन कान्हा जी होली खेलने की तैयारी करके आये। साथ लाये होली का केशरिया रंग गुलाल।
राधा जी भी तैयार थी।
पहली बार में कान्हा जी ने दोनों हाथों में केशरिया रंग लिया और राधा जी के चारों और घूम रहे। राधा जी भी सचेत थी वो भी सावधानी से देख रही थी की कब कान्हा जी रंग फेकेंगे और मैं उस रंग से कैसे बच जाऊ।
कान्हा जी ने सोचा की आज तो बड़े आराम से ही राधा जी को रंग लगा देंगे और जैसे ही कान्हा जी ने श्री राधा जी को रंग लगाने की कोशिश की राधा जी सावधान थी वो तुरंत ही पीछे हट गई और अपना मुख कान्हा जी से दूर कर लिया इधर कान्हा जी रंग लेकर राधा जी को लगाने ही वाले थे पर राधा जी के पीछे हटने से सारा केशरिया रंग धरती पर गिर गया।
सभी बड़े जोर जोर से हँसने लगे।
अब दूसरी बार में कान्हा जी ने उनका ही पिला फटका (दुपटटा) लिया उसमें ढेर सारा गुलाल भर कर उस दुपट्टे को झोली बना लिया और उसको फैकने के लिए घुमाने लगे राधा जी भी सावधान थी। अब जैसे ही कान्हा जी ने गुलाल से भरी झोली राधा जी की और फेकी राधा जी तुरंत ही उस स्थान से हट कर सखियो के साथ दूर खड़ी हो गई।
अब कान्हा जी की दो बारी पूर्ण हो चुकी थी सब गोप ग्वाल और गोपियाँ भी आनंद मग्न होकर यह लीला देख रहे थे। अब तीसरी बारी के लिए कान्हा जी भी राधा जी को रंग में रंगने के लिये उत्साहित थे।
कान्हा जी ने रंग लिया और राधा जी की और दौड़ लगा दी, राधा जी भी तैयार थी उन्होंने भी दौड लगाई राधा जी आगे कान्हा जी उनके पीछे और इनके पीछे सारे गोप गोपियां। कभी राधा जी पेड़ पर चढ़ती तो कान्हा जी भी चढ़ने की कोशिश करते तो राधा जी झट से नीचे उतरकर कभी अटारी पर पहुँच जाती तो कभी किसी घर में छुप जाती। कान्हा जी उस घर के बहार ही छुप गए जहाँ राधा जी थी। कुछ देर पश्चात् जब राधा जी को लगा की अब कान्हा जी नहीं है तो वो घर से बहार की ओर आती है कान्हा जी ने देख लिया वो भी सावधानी से राधा जी की और छिप कर पीछे तरफ से आने लगे।
राधा जी को कान्हा जी की आहट सुनाई दी तो वो भी जल्दी से आगे की और बढ़ गई इधर कान्हा जी रंग लगाने की तैयारी में थे राधा जी के बढ़ जाने से सारा रंग वहीं घर की दहलीज पर ही गिर गया।
सभी फिर हँसने लगे। अब कान्हा जी को राधा जी ने सभी गोप गोपियों के बिच बैठाया और राधा जी ने दोनों हाथों की चारों उंगलिया भरकर काज़ल लिया और कान्हा जी की आँखों के नीचे गाल तक लगाया।
कान्हा जी का यह अद्भुत श्रंगार देखकर सभी देवतागण भी आकाश से भगवान की जय जय कार करते हुए पुष्प वर्षा करने लगे।

Holi is celebrated for 40 days in Braj from Basant Panchami to Falgun Purnima, that is why it is said that there is Hori in the whole world and Hora in Braj. Once Shri Radha ji was sitting with her friends and was discussing with them about celebrating Holi, then after some time Kanha ji came there, he also started listening to her conversation and said that we will also play Holi with you.
Shri Radha ji said that it is okay but if you are not able to apply color on my face in 3 times, then I will apply kajal on your eyes. Kanha ji said it is okay. The next day Kanha ji came after preparing to play Holi. Bring the saffron color of Holi with you. Radha ji was also ready.
For the first time, Kanha ji took saffron color in both the hands and roamed around Radha ji. Radha ji was also alert, she was also watching carefully that when Kanha ji will throw colors and how I can escape from that color. Kanha ji thought that today he will apply color to Radha ji very comfortably and as soon as Kanha ji tried to apply color to Shri Radha ji, Radha ji was careful, she immediately backed away and turned her face away from Kanha ji. Taken here, Kanha ji was about to apply color to Radha ji, but due to Radha ji’s retreat, the whole saffron color fell on the earth.
Everyone started laughing out loud. Now in the second time, Kanha ji took his own yellow scarf (scarf) filled a lot of gulal in it, made that scarf a bag and started rotating it to throw away. Radha ji was also careful. Now as soon as Kanha ji threw Radha ji’s bag full of gulal and Radha ji immediately moved away from that place and stood far away with her friends.
Now Kanha ji’s two turns had been completed, all the cowherd boys and gopis were also watching this leela with joy. Now Kanha ji was also excited to paint Radha ji for the third turn.
Kanha ji took color and started running towards Radha ji, Radha ji was also ready, she also ran Radha ji in front, Kanha ji behind her and all the gopes and gopis behind her. Sometimes Radha ji would climb the tree, Kanha ji would also try to climb it, then Radha ji would quickly get down and reach the attic, sometimes she would hide in a house. Kanha ji hid outside the house where Radha ji was. After some time, when Radha ji felt that Kanha ji is no more, she comes out of the house.
When Radha ji heard Kanha ji’s voice, she also quickly moved forward and here Kanha ji was preparing to apply color, due to Radha ji’s increase, all the color fell on the threshold of the house itself.
Everyone started laughing again. Now Radha ji made Kanha ji sit in the middle of all the Gopis and Radha ji filled all the four fingers of both hands and applied kajal under the eyes of Kanha ji till the cheek.
Seeing this wonderful adornment of Kanha ji, all the deities started showering flowers from the sky chanting ‘Jai Jai’ to God.
