किसी शहर में एक वेश्या थी। उसका नाम था जीवन्ती। उसे कोई संतान न थी। इसलिये उसने एक सुग्गेका बच्चा खरीद लिया और पुत्रवत् उसे पालने लग गयी। वह सुग्गेको ‘राम राम राम राम’ पढ़ाने लगी। अभ्याससे सुग्गा ‘राम-राम’ बोलना सीख गया और सुन्दर स्वरोंसे वह प्रायः सर्वदा ‘राम राम’ ही कूजता रहता। एक दिन दैवयोगसे दोनोंके ही प्राण छूट गये। इनको लेनेके लिये यमदूत पहुँचे। इधर विष्णुदूत भी आये। विष्णुदूतोंने भगवन्नामका माहात्म्य बतलाकर यमदूतोंसे उन दोनोंको छोड़ देनेका आग्रह किया यमदूतोंने उनके दीर्घ और विशाल पाप-समुदाय तथा यमराजकी आज्ञा बतलाकर अपनी लाचारी व्यक्त की। अन्तमें युद्धकी नौबत आ पहुँची । युद्धमें यमदूतोंकेसेनानायक चण्डको गहरी मार पड़ी। यमदूत उन्हें लेकर हाहाकार करते हुए भाग चले। सारी बात यमराजको विदित हुई। उन्होंने कहा – ” -“दूतो! उन्होंने मरते समय यदि ‘राम’ इन दो अक्षरोंको उच्चारण किया है तो उन्हें मुझसे कोई भय नहीं रह गया । संसारमें ऐसा कोई पाप नहीं है, जिसका राम नामके स्मरणसे नाश न हो जाय। राम-नामका जप करनेवाले कभी विषाद या क्लेशको नहीं प्राप्त होते। इसलिये अब ऐसे लोगोंको भूलकर भी यहाँ लानेकी चेष्टा न करना। मेरा उनको प्रणाम है तथा मैं उनके अधीन हूँ।’
इधर विष्णुदूत हर्षमें भरकर जयध्वनिके साथ उस सुग्गे तथा गणिकाको विमानमें बिठलाकर विष्णु लोकको ले गये। (पद्मपुराण, क्रियायोगसार, अध्याय 14)
There was a prostitute in a city. Her name was Jeevanti. He didn’t have any child. That’s why she bought a piglet and started raising it like a son. She started teaching ‘Ram Ram Ram Ram’ to Sugge. With practice, Sugga learned to say ‘Ram-Ram’ and he would almost always chant ‘Ram Ram’ in beautiful voices. One day, by chance, both of them lost their lives. Yamdoot reached to take them. Vishnudoot also came here. By telling the greatness of the name of Lord Vishnu, the messengers of Yama urged the Yamdoots to leave them both. The Yamdoots expressed their helplessness by telling their long and huge sins and the orders of Yamraj. At last the time of war has come. In the war, Chand, the commander of the Yamdoots, was deeply beaten. The Yamdoots ran away crying with them. The whole thing came to the knowledge of Yamraj. He said – ” -” Messengers! If he has uttered these two letters ‘Ram’ at the time of his death, then he has no fear left of me. There is no such sin in the world, which cannot be destroyed by remembering the name of Ram. Those who chant the name of Ram never get sadness or tribulation. That’s why don’t try to bring such people here even by mistake. I salute him and I am under him.’
Here the messengers of Vishnu filled with joy and with shouts of joy, made that sugge and courtesan sit in the plane and took them to Vishnu Lok. (Padmapurana, Kriyayogasar, Chapter 14)
