सुकरातकी पत्नी अंटीपी अत्यन्त कर्कशा थी। वह अकारण ही पतिसे झगड़ा किया करती थी। एक बार किसी बातपर असंतुष्ट होकर वह सुकरातको भली-बुरी सुनाने लगी। सुकरात चुपचाप उसके कठोर वचन सुनते रहे। कोई प्रत्युत्तर न मिलनेसे उसका क्रोध बढ़ता ही गया। अन्तमें उसने एक पानी भरा बर्तन उठाकर सुकरात के सिरपर उड़ेल दिया। सुकरात बोले –’बहुतगर्जनाके बाद कुछ वर्षा भी तो होनी ही चाहिये थी।’ सुकरातके एक मित्रने उनकी दुर्दशा देखकर कहा – ‘ऐसी कर्कशा नारी छड़ीसे ही ठीक करने योग्य है।’
सुकरात हँसकर बोले आप चाहते हैं कि हम दोनों झगड़ें और आप तमाशा देखें ?’ मित्र इस शान्त पुरुषके सम्मुख लज्जित हो गये ।

Socrates’ wife Antipy was very harsh. She used to quarrel with her husband without any reason. Once being dissatisfied with something, she started telling good and bad things to Socrates. Socrates kept listening to his harsh words silently. On not getting any response, his anger kept on increasing. At last he picked up a vessel full of water and poured it on Socrates’ head. Socrates said – ‘After a lot of thunder, there should have been some rain too.’ Seeing his plight, a friend of Socrates said – ‘Such a sarcastic woman can only be cured with a stick.’
Socrates laughed and said, “You want us to fight and you watch the spectacle?” Friends were ashamed in front of this calm man.
