कर्तव्यके प्रति सावधानी

बगदादके एक खलीफाने अपना वेतन भी निश्चित कर रखा था। राजकार्य तथा प्रजाकी सेवाके बदले वे राज्यके कोषसे प्रतिदिन संध्यासमय तीन दिरम ले लिया करते थे। यद्यपि राज्यके अन्य कर्मचारियोंका वेतन इससे पर्याप्त अधिक था; किंतु खलीफा अपने लिये इतना ही पर्याप्त मानते थे।

एक बार खलीफाकी बेगमने उनसे प्रार्थना की ‘आप मुझे तीन दिनका वेतन अग्रिम दे दें तो मैं बच्चोंकेलिये ईदपर नये कपड़े सीकर बना लूँ।’ खलीफा बोले—’यदि मैं तीन दिन जीता न रहूँ तो

यह कर्ज कौन चुकायेगा ? तुम खुदासे मेरी जिन्दगीके तीन दिनका पट्टा ला दो तो मैं तीन दिनका अग्रिम वेतन खजानेसे उठाऊँ ।’

बेचारी बेगम क्या कहती। अपने कर्तव्यनिष्ठ स्वामीकी सावधानी उसे भी बहुत सच्ची और उचित जान पड़ी। – सु0 सिं0

A Caliph of Baghdad had also fixed his salary. Instead of serving the government and the people, he used to take three dirams from the state treasury every evening. Although the salary of other state employees was much higher than this; But the Khalifa considered this much enough for himself.
Once Khalifa’s wife prayed to him ‘You give me three days’ salary in advance, so that I can sew new clothes for the children on Eid.’ Khalifa said – ‘If I do not live for three days
Who will repay this loan? You give me a lease of three days of my life from God, then I will collect three days’ advance salary from the treasury.’
