श्रीसङ्गामजीको तप करते कितने दिन बीत गये। स्त्री, पुत्र एवं जगत्की किसी भी वस्तुके प्रति उनके मनमें आसक्ति नहीं रह गयी थी। ममताके बन्धन छिन्न हो चुके थे। अखण्ड ब्रह्मचर्य उनका व्रत था। शाश्वत शान्तिके पथिकके अडिग मनमें कभी कोई विकार नहीं उत्पन्न हो पाता। पर भगवान् तथागतके दर्शन किये कितने दिन बीत गये थे। उनका मन रह-रहकर भगवान्के चरणोंका चिन्तन करता रहता। उन्होंने सुना ‘भगवान् इस समय श्रावस्तीमें अनाथ पिण्डकके जेतवनमें विहार कर रहे हैं।’ वे भगवान् के दर्शनार्थ चल पड़े।
श्रीसङ्गामजी भगवान्के समीप कुछ दूरीपर एक सघन वृक्षकी शीतल छायामें विश्राम कर रहे थे।
‘हे श्रमण!’ उनकी पहली स्त्रीको उनके आनेका समाचार मिल गया था। चरणोंमें मस्तक रखकर उसने निवेदन किया ‘मैं पुत्रवती हूँ। मेरी गोदमें आपका पुत्र है। आप मेरा पालन करें।’
सङ्गामजीके नेत्र बंद हो गये। कोई उत्तर नहीं पाकर पत्नीने पुनः विनीत प्रार्थना की-‘मैं आपकी पत्नी हूँ। यह पुत्र आपका है। आपके बिना मैं असहाय होगयी हूँ। आप मुझपर कृपा करके मेरा और इस बालकका पालन करें।’
साधक जड़की भाँति निश्चल था। पत्नीने अधीर होकर कुछ रोषसे अपना बच्चा वहीं धरतीपर रख दिया और कहा- ‘इस अबोध बालकके लालन पालनके लिये मैं क्या करूँ? आप मेरी चिन्ता भले नहीं करें, किंतु इस शिशुका जैसे बने, ध्यान रखें। मैं चली।’
स्त्री चल पड़ी। दूर चली गयी। पर, उसके प्राण संतानके पास थे। हृदय-खण्डको वह कैसे पृथक् कर सकती थी। दूरसे वृक्षकी ओटसे उसने देखा, पति पाषाण-प्रतिमाकी भाँति अचल था; उसने पुत्रकी ओर देखा भी नहीं । अन्ततः उसे निश्चय हो गया- ‘अब इनके मनमें मेरे तथा पुत्रके लिये ममताकी छाया भी नहीं रह गयी।’
स्त्री लौटी और शिशुको अङ्कमें लेकर चल पड़ी। स्त्रीकी यह दशा सर्वज्ञ प्रभुकी दृष्टिसे छिपी नहीं थी। उनके मुँहसे निकल पड़ा-‘उसके आनेसे न उसे हर्ष होता है और न चले जानेसे विषाद। आसक्तिसे सर्वथा रहित हैं ब्राह्मण सङ्गामजी ।’- शि0 दु0
How many days have passed by meditating on Shri Sangamji. There was no attachment left in his mind towards woman, son and anything in the world. The bonds of Mamta had been severed. Akhand celibacy was his vow. No disorder can ever arise in the steadfast mind of a traveler of eternal peace. But how many days had passed since I saw Lord Tathagat. His mind kept thinking about the feet of God. He heard that ‘the Lord is currently living in Sravasti in the Jetavana of the orphan Pindaka.’ They went to see God.
Shri Sangamji was resting under the cool shade of a dense tree at some distance near the Lord.
‘O Shraman!’ His first wife had got the news of his arrival. Keeping her head at his feet, she requested, ‘I am a daughter-in-law. I have your son in my lap. You follow me.’
Sangamji’s eyes closed. After getting no answer, the wife humbly prayed again – ‘I am your wife. This son is yours. I am helpless without you. You please take care of me and this child.
The seeker was motionless like a root. The wife got impatient and put her child there on the ground with some anger and said – ‘ What should I do for the upbringing of this innocent child? You may not worry about me, but be like this child, take care. I leave.’
The woman started walking. Gone away But, his life was with the child. How could she separate the heart-pieces. She saw from the distance of the tree, the husband was immovable like a stone-statue; He didn’t even look at the son. At last he became determined – ‘Now there is not even a shadow of affection left in his mind for me and his son.’
The woman returned and started walking with the baby in her arms. This condition of the woman was not hidden from the sight of the all-knowing Lord. It came out of his mouth – ‘ He is neither happy by his arrival nor sad by his departure. Brahmin Sangamji is absolutely free from attachment.’- Shi0 Du0
