tradition and custom
A cautionary tale about the birth and longevity of traditions, a Zen legend says that in an ashram a pet cat caused a lot of disturbance during meditation with its merriment. As a result, by Guruji’s order, he was kept tied with a rope during meditation. Even after Guruji’s death, the cat continued to be tied at the time of meditation. Upon the death of that cat, experts attested to the constant presence of a caged cat in every meditation session. As a result, a new cat was bought and it was kept tied at the time of meditation. Centuries later, in the authentic literature published from that ashram, interpretations were found rendering the importance of keeping the cat tied at the time of meditation.
